Santa Rosa Southeast Greenway We are a community effort to develop a vibrant urban greenway on the 2-mile stretch of open space that links Spring Lake Park to downtown Santa Rosa.

Currently owned by Caltrans and unavailable for public use for over 50 years, the property may become available for sale in the near future. Our community has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire the land and create a vibrant urban greenway for residents and visitors to enjoy now and for years to come. This effort will require an active partnership of individuals, community groups, non-profit organizations, the business community, and local, regional, and state agencies.

As a transportation planning and engineering firm, they help create safer, more connected places for people to walk, bike, and move through their communities. With expertise in active transportation and trail corridor planning, they bring practical solutions that connect people and places.

If you were paying attention, how many different plant and animal species could you spot in an hour?

Thank you to everyone who came out for the special BioBlitz hosted by Sonoma Land Trust and Sonoma County Ag + Open Space at the Southeast Greenway last month to celebrate CA Biodiversity Day and Latino Conservation Week. In one hour, visitors recorded 71 plants and animals to iNaturalist.org. Observations included rolly polies, spiders, plume thistle, fennel, poison oak, white and valley oaks, chicory, wild carrots, aphids turkeys, and even a monarch caterpillar on milkweed!

What an impressive amount of wildlife call this corridor in the middle of Santa Rosa home!

If you’ve driven by or walked on the Southeast Greenway you have probably seen turkeys roaming the property. We recently spotted this silvery-white wild turkey with a flock.

Unlike true albinos, leucistic turkeys like this one keep normal dark colors in their eyes, beards, skin, and legs while the color pigment doesn’t reach the feathers. This can be caused by a genetic mutation, injury, or aging and only occurs in roughly 1 in 5,000 to 100,000 wild turkeys.

Get outside and enjoy the Greenway this October!

Do you know which creeks cross the Greenway and where features such as trails and community gardens might be found in the future? Join us on October 10 from 10am-12pm to learn more about the land and the next phase in the park planning process as we explore part of the property with you!

Sonoma Land Trust and Sonoma County Ag + Open Space will be holding a special series on the Greenway every Wednesday in October from 4pm-5pm. During “Sharing Stories in Nature” participants will read a chapter of Sonoma Land Trust’s history focusing on various themes. This will be used as a basis for reflecting on our own stories, with time to gather our thoughts and then share with the group.

Meet the Community Engagement Team: Latino Service Providers

Latino Service Providers (LSP) supports Sonoma County’s Latinx community to help improve access to healthcare, mental health services, education, legal support, and other social services. During this phase of the Southeast Greenway’s master planning process, LSP is supporting outreach activities, especially for Spanish speaking residents near the Greenway and across Santa Rosa. You’ll see them tabling with us at Water Bark and other community events, at open houses, and other events to reach neighbors.

Some of the best things in a community begin with a simple idea: what if?

What if this long-vacant corridor becomes a place filled with laughter, connection, nature, and joy? With the City of Santa Rosa, California, in partnership with Sonoma Land Trust, Southeast Greenway volunteers, and other community partners, we have begun the Greenway's next chapter with the launch of the master planning and community engagement process.

The Greenway isn't being created for the community, but WITH the community. Your input will help create a future Greenway reflecting the needs and priorities of Santa Rosa residents and its diverse communities. National parks probably come to mind when thinking about public lands, but any area of land or water owned by a group of citizens and managed by a government agency is considered public land. We’re proud to celebrate National Public Lands Day as we enter the next phase of becoming Santa Rosa’s newest public park.

Show your support of our public lands by:
🌿Volunteering – Help clean trails, remove invasive species, plant trees, and more at your local parks. Sonoma County Regional Parks and the City of Santa Rosa, California have a number of volunteer days throughout the year. You can also visit our website to volunteer with the Greenway.
🌿Advocating – Stand up for our parks, especially at the national level. Support the Roadless Rule, Endangered Species Act, and other climate protections that are under attack.
🌿Recreate responsibly – While visiting parks, stay on designated paths, keep a safe distance from wildlife, and leave no trace (pack out all your trash).

The Southeast Greenway is entering an exciting new chapter—and we have a new look to support our community-led planning process!

Inspired by the corridor’s natural beauty and future potential, the new logo features rolling hills, a winding pathway, and native wildflowers symbolizing connection, movement, environmental stewardship, and the relationship between people and nature.
