Beginning August 3, 2026, BeAScout will launch an updated experience designed to give prospective families the information they want before contacting a unit.

The goal is simple: make it easier for families to find the right Scouting unit and take the next step.

Starting July 9, unit leaders can update these new fields in their Unit Pin within Organization Manager:

💰 Fundraising Helps Cover Costs
Let families know if fundraising opportunities help offset the cost of participating.

👋 Trial Visit Encouraged
Show prospective families that they are welcome to attend a meeting before deciding to join.

🏷️ Unit Fee
Display any additional unit dues beyond the national membership fee.

📅 Meeting Schedule
• Meeting Frequency (weekly, biweekly, monthly, etc.)
• Meeting Day
• Meeting Start Time
• Meeting End Time

Please encourage your unit leaders to complete these updates before August 3 so families will see accurate, complete information when the new BeAScout experience goes live.

Please note: Any updates made to these new fields before August 3 will not appear on BeAScout until the new experience launches.

A complete Unit Pin helps families make informed decisions and take the first step into Scouting.

"Be Prepared" is more than a Scout motto. It's a mindset that stays with you for life.

This week, that lesson was put into action during an outdoor family movie night in Washington, D.C. When lit Roman candle fireworks were thrown into a crowd, one attendee immediately recognized the danger. Knowing the device would continue firing, he ran toward it, picked it up, and threw it away from families and children before anyone was seriously injured.

Afterward, he explained why he acted:

"I was a Boy Scout, and it's the Boy Scouts that really taught me that, you know, you act. You stand up and you protect others."

That simple statement captures something every Scout understands. Scouting is not just about camping, hiking, or earning badges. It is about developing character, courage, and the confidence to step forward when others need help.

For Scouting alumni, the lessons learned years, or even decades, ago continue to shape decisions in moments that matter most. The skills may change over time, but the values endure.

As a Scouting alum, I find that stories like this one remind me why Scouting leaves such a lasting impact.

Nine years after losing his 4-year-old sister, Evie, in a tragic drowning accident, 17-year-old Carson Hoskins returned to Wildwood Park to dedicate a free life jacket station as his Eagle Scout service project.

What stands out is that Carson first came up with the idea as a Cub Scout, shortly after his family's loss. He carried that goal with him throughout his Scouting journey and never lost sight of it.

The station provides free life jackets, rescue ropes, and CPR instructions for families visiting the lake. Carson raised more than $1,000 and worked with community members and organizations to bring the project to life. Each life jacket is tagged as part of Evie's station, ensuring her memory continues to make a difference.

Carson's message is one every family can take to heart - water safety matters, and life jackets only work when they're worn.

Scouting is much more than earning badges. Scouting teaches young people how to serve others, solve problems, and turn ideas into action. Carson's project reflects those values in a deeply meaningful way.

Congratulations, Carson, on earning the rank of Eagle Scout and creating a project that will serve your community for years to come.

Big news for Scouts BSA youth leaders.

The Scouts BSA SPL Summit is coming in September 2026. Building on the National Youth Council, the Summit brings Senior Patrol Leaders from across the country together to share feedback directly with the Scouts BSA National Committee.

What SPLs can expect:

• Quarterly online gatherings with SPLs nationwide
• Direct feedback sessions with national program leadership
• Early insight into upcoming program initiatives and resources
• A real chance to shape the future of Scouts BSA

The best ideas come from the youth who live the program every week. The SPL Summit puts their voices at the center.
