The California Oncology Research Institute (CORI) is committed to curing cancer through innovative research, early detection, education, & novel treatment

Since its inception in Santa Monica, California in 2008, the California Oncology Research Institute (CORI) has been committed to providing early diagnosis and treatment of cancer and innovative clinical and basic science research focusing on surgical technologies and the molecular biology of the tumors. Through scientific collaborations and alliances, CORI has established itself not only as a regional cancer institute in Southern California, but also as a global leader in cancer research with a strong presence across four continents. With our internationally recognized team of researchers and surgical oncologists, CORI is at the forefront of cancer research and treatment. CORI scientific researchers are recipients of several, highly distinguished grant awards from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These ongoing grants will enable us to create novel cancer therapies, which ultimately should lead to improve techniques for our surgical oncologists. Together, we can work collectively to research the early diagnosis, treatment, and cure of the cancers in our core program: melanoma, breast, colon, stomach, re**al, pancreatic, and liver cancers.

Knowledge can empower you to make informed choices about your health.

After learning she carried a BRCA1 gene mutation, Angelina Jolie chose preventive surgery to significantly reduce her breast cancer risk. By sharing her experience publicly, she helped bring greater awareness to genetic testing, family history, and hereditary cancer risk.

Not everyone needs genetic testing or preventive surgery. But everyone can benefit from understanding their family history, knowing their risk factors, and discussing appropriate screening and prevention options with a healthcare professional.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let knowledge be a starting point for action.

Since her breast cancer diagnosis in 2014, Joan Lunden has used her voice to advocate for early detection and support for patients and survivors.

No family history doesn’t mean no risk.

Sheryl Crow was diagnosed with DCIS, a non-invasive form of breast cancer, at age 44 after an annual mammogram detected it early. She underwent a lumpectomy followed by radiation therapy.

Her experience highlights an important message this Breast Cancer Awareness Month: understanding your personal risk and following recommended screening guidelines matters, even without a family history of breast cancer.

Know your risk. Know your screening options. Stay proactive.

Robin Roberts discovered a lump during a breast self-exam in 2007 and was later diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer. Her experience has made her a passionate voice for cancer awareness and the importance of staying proactive about your health.

Know what’s normal for you. Keep up with recommended breast cancer screenings. And if you notice a change, talk with your healthcare provider.

Fear may be part of the journey, but it doesn’t have to define it.

In 2016, former supermodel Janice Dickinson was diagnosed with early-stage DCIS after a small lump was detected in her breast. She underwent two lumpectomies and radiation treatment.

Her story is a powerful reminder of why breast cancer awareness and early detection matter. Knowing your body, keeping up with recommended screenings, and talking with your healthcare provider about changes can make a difference.
