Joseph is in his 80s and lives alone on the second floor of a Section 8 apartment in Santa Monica that is reachable only by stairs. Six years ago, his back deteriorated to the point where he can now only get around with a cane and walker. He lives on a fixed income and during a time where the cost of food has never been higher.

"Funding for this organization is extremely important," Joseph told us. "I'm living in Section 8 housing which helps, but food is so expensive nowadays. I'm in my 80s now; with not a lot of income, without Meals on Wheels West, I wouldn't be able to stay living here."

Joseph is exactly who Meals on Wheels West exists to serve. And right now, serving neighbors like him is harder than it has ever been in our more than 52-year history. Due to rising meal costs, funding gaps, and rapidly growing demand for food assistance, since last fall there has been a waitlist for home-delivered meals. These same pressures caused us to pause our breakfast program and weekend frozen meal service. And underlying all of it: funding cuts that are putting our most vulnerable neighbors at risk.

The most powerful way to make an impact right now is through a donation. Every dollar helps us serve our community and reach homebound neighbors like Joseph and the many other neighbors who are waiting, and counting on our community to show up for them.

The results are in, and thanks to your support, we are proud to be named a Most Loved Nonprofit Organization, capturing second place in the annual Santa Monica Daily Press Contest!

Meals on Wheels West has been serving our Santa Monica and Westside community for more than fifty years, and this honor reminds us of the impact our mission on all of our neighbors. We thank all of our supporters, partners, volunteers, and clients who voted for us in this year's edition of the contest, marking our fourth win in five years!

The best way to celebrate it is to keep the momentum going as we enter the summer months, a critical time in order to keep our meals reaching our homebound neighbors.

Join us as a volunteer and deliver a warm meal (and an even warmer smile) to a neighbor in need. Make a donation to help us reach more seniors in our community. Or follow us on social media to stay connected and share our mission with the people you love. (LINK IN BIO)

Hidden Hunger, the hunger behind closed doors, is a reality for too many in our community. These neighbors don't ask for help easily. They've lived independent lives at home. They've worked their lives and contributed to our communities. Now, circumstances have changed, and they shouldn't have to choose between food and and other expenses like medicine and rent.

Meals on Wheels West is here for them. But we can only reach them with your help. Every meal delivered is a moment of nourishment, connection, and dignity, and a signal to someone homebound that they have not been forgotten.

Visit mealsonwheelswest.org/hiddenhunger to ensure our delivery program keeps running this summer.

This , we want to introduce you to Elani.

Elani is 90 years old and has lived in her building in Santa Monica since 1973. She spent her career working front desks - greeting people, making them feel seen. When she could, she traveled the world, discovering new places, people, and cultures. "I learned that we are all alike," she says. "We have the same things happen to us happen all over the world. People are people."

Today, Elani lives on a fixed income. Getting to a grocery store and cooking for herself are no longer possible, especially with rising meal costs. Without Meals on Wheels West, she says simply: she would struggle to eat.

Over the next three months, we need to deliver 33,124 meals throughout Los Angeles County's coastal communities. Every meal we deliver tells a homebound neighbor like Elani that their community hasn't forgotten them.

Today, on World Hunger Day, we invite you to give back to our community. Donate at mealsonwheelswest.org/hiddenhunger or at the link in our bio.

Today is . 🌍

But hunger isn't just a distant crisis - it's happening right here, behind the closed doors of our neighborhoods. For homebound seniors in our community, a missed meal isn't an inconvenience. It's isolation. It's malnutrition. It's people looking the other way.

This World Hunger Day, look their way. Every dollar delivers a fresh, nourishing meal to a neighbor who needs it. Join us in ending Hidden Hunger.

That smile is the impact of a knock on the door and a friendly face.

For our seniors, veterans, and neighbors who live with chronic illnesses or disabilities, West is much more than a meal. When they see our volunteers during every delivery, that simple act of saying "Hi, how are you today?", reminds our homebound clients that they are seen and supported.

The social connection that our volunteers provide is an important pillar of . Join us on a route for an hour or two of your day to meet your fellow community members and see how much your visit means to them.
