Now is a great time to become a Delivery Volunteer with Meals on Wheels West!

The seniors we serve are not only facing food insecurity, but also often live alone and don’t see many people during the week, aside from the friendly face at the door with a hot meal. That’s our volunteers.

We are always looking for more Delivery Volunteers, and with the holiday months approaching, it’s a great time to get involved. A short visit, a warm hello, and a few minutes of conversation can brighten a client’s whole day.

Visit https://mealsonwheelswest.org/volunteer/delivery-volunteering/ to learn more and to sign up.

It’s , and learning the warning signs of a stroke can help save a life. Thanks to Providence Saint John’s Health Center, here’s the BE FAST checklist for spotting a stroke:

Balance – Sudden trouble with balance or coordination
Eyes – Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes
Face – One side of the face drooping or feeling weak
Arms – Weakness or numbness in one arm
Speech – Slurred, garbled, or hard-to-understand speech
Time – Don’t wait. Call 911 right away.

A big thank you to Providence Saint John’s Health Center and Saint John’s Health Center Foundation for their generous partnership! Because of their past training sessions, our staff and volunteers know how to recognize stroke symptoms using BE FAST.

This week, we've had many requests from our clients with pets for dry dog food, and we've exhausted our current supply. Any donations of this Blue Buffalo dog kibble or other brand off of our Amazon Wish List would really help us reach those clients who need it. Donating through our wish list link sends the gift directly to our office.

How to Donate: Tap the linktree in our bio and navigate to our Pet Pantry Wishlist or visit tinyurl.com/PetPantryList.

Thank you to anyone who is able to donate, and if you do, please email [email protected] a copy of your receipt so that we can send you a donation acknowledgment.

Being prepared for emergencies saves lives, which is why we partner with Providence to ensure our clients are safe when disaster strikes. Many clients were donated a Providence emergency kit which contains water, a food ration, an emergency blanket, a survival blanket, a poncho, and flashlight.

Meals on Wheels West thanks Providence and the Saint Johns Health Center Foundation for continuing to support our community.

Daniel, 70, has lived in Santa Monica his whole life. He grew up playing baseball, from little league to SaMoHi, and when he picks up a glove today, he’s a kid again.

After decades in the cement industry, Daniel lives with a heart condition and a bad ankle. For years, he was in denial about needing help. It wasn’t until he started skipping meals that he reached out, and his doctor helped enroll him with Meals on Wheels West.

Now he knows he can count on our volunteers to show up throughout the week. On a low income, every meal matters.

This Tackling Hunger Month, you can be the reason someone like Daniel is noticed. 💛

Meet Irene. 🧡

Irene is 85 and lives in Marina del Rey. She spent more than two decades as a dental assistant, used to love playing tennis, and now loves to paint. She’s been enrolled with Meals on Wheels West since 2021, when a fractured arm made it hard to prepare food.

“It was a blessing to be able to have food delivered to me when I only had use of one arm.”

Irene also treasures the volunteers who bring her meals: “I always tell them they are doing a great service. I feel very grateful for them and the organization.”

October is Tackling Hunger Month. Last year, we delivered 69,319 meals to neighbors like Irene, each with a knock from a volunteer who checks in. Will you help put a meal on the table for a neighbor like Irene this month?

💛 $30 delivers 3 meals, each with a volunteer check-in
💛 $50 provides a full week of meals for one neighbor
💛 $280 provides 28 meals, more than five weeks of meals and wellness checks
