As If We Were Staying Book Launch & Storytelling

with Spencer R. Scott of Solar Punk Farms

Join us in the Peace Dome with biologist, writer, and farmer Spencer R. Scott for a conversation around his new book, As If We Were Staying.

Nearly a decade ago, Spencer left his career in cancer research to dedicate his life to climate and the possibility of a different way forward. Alongside his husband Nick, he transformed a degraded piece of land into Solar Punk Farms, learning firsthand what it takes to regenerate land, build community, and create something worth staying for.

His new book brings together a lifetime of biology, climate activism, and lessons from the farm. A story about our relationship to the natural world, the places we call home, and what becomes possible when we choose to care for them together.

An evening of storytelling, ecology, and conversation about building a more beautiful, life-affirming future, right where we are.

Longtime friends, Adam and Niv come together through the shared act of breaking bread. Adam, of Palestinian background, and Niv, from Israel, bring family recipes, personal stories, and a spirit of peace to the table.

A meal shaped by friendship, memory, and the simple hope that food can help us remember what we share.

A couple weekends ago at Community Table we gave thanks for the rain and moved into our Peace Portal for a magical dinner with Chef Colin Whitbread. As the seasons continue to blend into one another, we look forward to hosting the rest of our Fall dinners in the covered portal to welcome the warmth and ambiance of a Community Table with our friends.

Through adversity, true friendship is found.

Last week, we looked up from the farm and saw the Norte Fire burning along the ridge above us. Our thoughts went immediately to our neighbors, the families being evacuated, and the first responders working to protect our community.

With our regular programming postponed because of the fire, we found ourselves with ingredients already harvested and prepared for our weekly Peace Pizza dinner. We asked ourselves how we might turn this difficult moment into an opportunity to serve.

Our team came together and began making pizzas for evacuees and first responders. A simple offering of food and care for people who had been displaced and those working to keep our community safe.

The Norte Fire reminded us how quickly conditions can change, how powerful nature can be, and how much we depend on one another. At The Ecology Center, we see building a resilient community as an essential part of our work. Moments like these remind us why.

Community spaces have always played an important role in bringing people together, in good times and challenging ones. The relationships we build with the land and with one another are what allow us to respond when our neighbors need us.

We are grateful for the opportunity to serve, for everyone who came together, and for the friendship and generosity that continue to define this community.

May these challenges bring us closer together and deepen our commitment to caring for this place and one another.
