💔 Today, our hearts are completely broken at Southern California Weimaraner Rescue. We had to say our final goodbyes to seven-year-old Walter. Though his time with us was brief, his life meant the world to everyone who touched it.Walter came to us as a stray from a high-kill shelter, completely unclaimed and forgotten by the world. From the moment he entered our care, we knew he was fighting an uphill battle. His ribs were severely pronounced, he was expelling heavy green fluid from his lungs, unable to catch a breath, his teeth were in terrible condition, and he carried a large, pendulous growth on his abdomen. We immediately scheduled veterinary appointments, desperate to find a way to heal him.Yet, through all of his physical suffering, Walter’s spirit was absolutely beautiful. He was the sweetest, most gentle boy. His eyes would constantly search the room just looking for a human connection, always asking for another gentle head rub. He was profoundly grateful just to be off the streets, out of the blistering heat, and safe inside a foster home.In the end, his fragile body was simply too weak to fight any longer, and the kindest choice we could make was to let him go peacefully. While we are devastated, we take comfort in knowing that for at least the last three days of his life, Walter was completely safe, comfortable, and deeply loved. He knew that he mattered.Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to his foster mom, Kathy, for holding him and ensuring he wasn't alone at the very end. We enter the world of animal rescue to save lives, but sometimes, our true purpose is simply to be there at the finish line—ensuring an animal's final moments are filled with the love they always deserved.

Get ready to fall in love with our newest furry friend, Walter! 🐾💕 This sweet boy has got a lot going on, but don't worry, we've got this! Shelter estimates say he's around 5-7 years young, and let's just say he's been around the block a few times. His medical notes are a real page-turner:

“8/24/26 DVM exam. BARH, hyperactive. Heavy dental wear/staining with gingival hyperplasia. Hygroma formation at pressure points (bilateral elbows, sternum, lateral thighs, hip points), pendunculated cauliflower growth left ventrocaual thorax, intact male (2 testicles descended dental disease

mass ventral thorax

intact adult male canine - estimated at 5-7 years of age”

It breaks our hearts to think about how Walter ended up here. We suspect he was abandoned after wandering the streets for a couple of weeks, relying on the kindness of strangers for food. When his stray hold was up, not a single soul came looking for him. We can already tell you that this boy is absolutely amazing, but he needs your thoughts and prayers right now. When we brought him to his foster, we discovered he has a severe upper respiratory infection that we weren’t aware of. Walter did not deserve to be treated this way, and he needs some extra love to pull through. On top of being sick, this gentle giant is definitely on the skinny side and needs a few groceries to get his weight up. He is a big, beautiful pup with a docked tail and a heart of gold. For now, Walter is resting easy on soft beds in Escondido with his foster mom and fur-siblings. He will be available for meet-and-greets once he is fully recovered and neutered. Please keep Walter in your prayers tonight. See his photos and look into those sweet eyes! 🐾❤️

A Sky-High Success Story for River!!!!!

We are thrilled to share a heartwarming update that made this weekend truly special. River, a wonderful young Weimaraner, began his life as a stray and faced further hardship when his initial adopters returned him to the shelter for having "too much energy"—a common misunderstanding of the breed.

Fortunately, River's true nature shined through in foster care, where he proved to be exceptionally sweet, gentle, and relaxed. A tiny bit of naughtiness came out but who needed that loofah anyway!

His journey came to a beautiful conclusion this weekend as he relocated to his forever home at an Airbnb property owned by his truly grateful adopters in the Paso Robles area.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Pilots N Paws pilot Darrin Kent and his companion Les Jackson. They generously volunteered their time and aircraft to fly River from the Temecula area to his new life. Thanks to perfect weather and a very cooperative pup, River has officially landed in paradise.

A BIG shout out to his wonderful new adopters, who treated the pilots to a fantastic lunch upon landing. River joined in, showing off all of that "out-of-control energy" by being an absolute perfect gentleman. Clearly, he just needed the right people who truly understand the breed! Thank you, Darrin and Les, and congratulations to River's new family!

Update: while we try so hard to save all we can, it just wasn’t quick enough for Forest. We’re all devastated that the family chose to let Forest go at 6 pm tonight. Not a dry eye…., 😭 💔 ❤️‍🩹 Hang on tight to all of yours.

What is a TRUE rescue? It is the moment we choose to look directly at the heartbreak others have walked away from, and say, "Your life still matters."

If you want to know what brings tears to a rescuer's eyes, it is a call like the one we just received. A family member visited home after months away and found Forrest, his 7-year-old Weimaraner family member , completely abandoned in his own backyard. Once a cherished family dog who loved trips to the beach, Forest has spent the last few years treated like a bag of old rags—ignored in the blistering heat, barely fed, and starved of human affection. To make matters worse, Forest is now completely blind from mature, opaque cataracts in both eyes. Unable to see, he wanders his backyard alone, bumping into walls, struggling just to find his food and water. He also suffers from a severe ear hematoma caused by constant head-shaking from untreated pests or infection.

The family sees euthanasia as the only option to "put him out of his misery." But Forest isn't ready to give up, and neither are we. He deserves to know what the good life feels like before his time is up. He deserves to know what it means to be truly loved and adored.

What Forest Needs Right Now: Forest is a beautiful, gentle soul who loves children and gets along wonderfully with other dogs. He doesn't want much—just a soft hand on his head so he knows he isn't alone anymore. Permanent Sanctuary or Foster Home:

We are searching for a compassionate, committed hero who will welcome Forest into their home and let his tired body rest on a soft, warm blanket.

Medical Sponsorship: He will require significant medical care. Our rescue is currently exploring options to see if we can surgically repair his ear and remove at least one of his cataracts to restore a portion of his vision and drastically improve his quality of life.

Forest is undoubtedly a challenge, but we know his perfect match is out there. COULD IT BE YOU?!

We have a few new dogs coming in. Anyone want an older already housetrained, calmer boy? Check out Bolt who is on his way in this week. We don't want him to linger in foster longer than needed. He deserves to be in his "special" place as soon as possible. Could it be with you??

URGENT: Special Homes Needed for Two Long-Term Rescue Residents! 🐾

SoCal Weimaraner Rescue currently has two beautiful boys who have spent months waiting in a boarding environment. Both have specific behavioral needs and require experienced handlers with true pack-leader qualities. If we cannot find suitable placement soon, we are genuinely uncertain of what their fate will be.

They just need dedicated owners willing to go the extra mile to gain their trust and earn a lifetime companion. The 3-3-3 rule for decompression applies heavily to both of these boys.🔹

Dallas
YOUNG 1 year old
Location: Currently in the Lancaster area
Compatibility: Excellent with women, good with most other dogs, but does not like men.
The Situation: It is heartbreakingly unfair that Dallas is stuck living in a kennel environment. He is fiercely loyal and deeply adores women, making him the absolute perfect sidekick for a single female owner. He needs a male-free household, or a dedicated setup where he can be securely kenneled whenever men visit.
Adoption Profile: View Dallas https://app.barrk.ca/admin/animals/380007

Citizen / Carson
The Situation: Citizen is an amazing, loving boy once he knows you, but he is highly insecure in new environments. He needs a patient adopter who will give him the time and space he needs to decompress. He is prone to reacting out of uncertainty until he fully settles in and feels comfortable with his handler. He is very unsure of children, so he should not be in a home with children. If children visit, he needs to be secured away from them.
