🌿 Emerald Keepers is teaming up with EDCO and the City of Coronado to give campaign signs a more sustainable send-off!

Did you know? Corrugated plastic campaign signs cannot go in residential blue recycling bins, and their metal stakes can actually damage recycling equipment.

We're making it easy to recycle both responsibly following the November election!

📅 Saturday, November 7
⏰ 8:00 a.m. – Noon (or when bins are full if before noon)
📍 Parking lot immediately north of Coronado City Hall
🚗 Enter via Strand Way, preferably from the northbound lane.

Emerald Keepers volunteers will be on hand to collect and separate campaign signs and metal stakes into designated recycling dumpsters.

🌊 Whether you're a candidate, campaign volunteer, or Coronado resident, please help spread the word! If you're not saving those signs for another election, bring them by and help keep unnecessary waste out of our landfills.

🌊 EL NIÑO IS COMING IN STRONG — AND CORONADO IS ALREADY GETTING A SNEAK PEEK! 🌧️

If you've noticed water where it doesn't usually belong around Coronado lately, you're not imagining things! Recent exceptionally high tides have flooded waterfront areas, threatened beaches, and given us a glimpse of what could be ahead.

And here's the big news: Scientists are predicting that this El Niño could be among the strongest on record!

🌎 WHAT EXACTLY IS EL NIÑO?

Every few years, warmer-than-normal ocean temperatures in the tropical Pacific disrupt normal wind and weather patterns. That can shift winter storms toward Southern California, bringing heavier rainfall, powerful surf, and increased flooding risks.

🌊 WHY SHOULD CORONADO BE CONCERNED?

Our beautiful island community is especially vulnerable because of its low elevation and proximity to both the ocean and San Diego Bay.

Here's the perfect storm scenario:

💧 King tides: These naturally occurring, exceptionally high tides can push water farther inland.

🌧️ Heavy rainfall: Intense storms can overwhelm drainage systems, especially when high bay levels prevent stormwater from draining effectively.

🏖️ Beach erosion: Powerful waves and elevated water levels can wash away sand and threaten coastal areas.

When high tides, heavy rain, and big surf arrive together, flooding can become a serious problem!

In fact, Coronado's City Council declared a local state of emergency on October 20 to help the City prepare and respond quickly to potential storm-related damage.

✅ FIVE THINGS YOU CAN DO NOW:

🍂 Clear leaves, litter, and debris from around your property before they wash into storm drains and eventually our ocean or bay.

💧 Reduce irrigation and turn off sprinklers when rain is forecast.

🌿 Help your landscape absorb rainwater rather than allowing it to run into the street.

🏠 Prepare for flooding if you live in a vulnerable area. Coronado offers up to 10 free sandbags per household, while supplies last.

The City of Coronado invites residents to join Public Safety leadership for a series of Community Town Halls focused on weather preparedness and keeping our community informed and connected.

These discussions will cover storm preparedness, El Niño conditions, and the resources available to help residents stay informed during changing weather conditions.
