Lamp of Learning, a 501(c)3, is dedicated to providing education scholarships to high performing San Diego high school seniors entering 4-year universities but lack financial resources. Starting as a philanthropic committee at the University Club atop Symphony Towers, the Lamp of Learning is now a full and independent 501(c)3. Since its inception in 2004, the University Club has raised more than $

175,000 and funded education for more than fifty students. The annual scholarship is open to qualified high school students throughout San Diego County that participate in the internationally acclaimed AVID Learning Program. AVID (Achievement via Individual Determination) students are often the first in their family to attend college and often underrepresented in higher education. The Lamp of Learning raises money and facilitates the interview process of these scholars to support achieving their full potential.

Lamp of Learning is pleased to welcome Rose Courtney as Interim Executive Director.

Rose joins the organization with more than 16 years of nonprofit leadership experience, bringing a strong track record of guiding youth-serving organizations through periods of growth, transition, and increased impact. In her interim role, she will focus on strengthening operational systems, advancing fundraising efforts, and supporting the continued success of Lamp’s scholarship and IGNITE programs.

Known for her collaborative and equity-centered approach, Rose is deeply committed to expanding access to higher education for high-achieving, low-income students across San Diego County. She looks forward to working closely with the board, partners, and community to build on Lamp’s strong foundation and momentum.
