👻 Spooky ghosts are haunting La Jolla Family House!

Our very own UC San Diego Health Thornton 2 East Nursing Team showed up in full holiday spirit, filling our halls with frightfully delicious treats and tacos.

One guest in particular had the best time decorating her very own bat cookie!

The patients and family members under our roof love to welcome team members and volunteers to our home away from home, especially this Halloween Season.

We hope this happy haunting of healthcare heroes visits us again soooon! 🎃

The Department of Pharmacy was moved by their experience hosting a meal for La Jolla Family House's 6th Birthday Party. We wanted to share two of the wonderful messages of feedback given to us with all of you:

"I want to give a shout out to the pharmacy team members who prepared dinner last evening for UCSD Health guests at the La Jolla Family House. Thanks also to those who contributed to the dinner food fund, and our Costco shopper. Special recognition for our legacy organizer, Jason Bailly.

It was great to see residents, staff, and managers chopping, cooking, grilling, serving, and cleaning up. The chance to dine and chat with patients from across the country gave us the chance to hear why our patients to choose UCSDH. I had the chance to dine with patients and family members who were thankful to be at UCSDH but even more excited to be heading back to Idaho and Wisconsin respectively. A priceless opportunity to remember why we do the work we do. We also had the fun of singing happy birthday, as the House celebrated its 6th anniversary last night (the cake was delicious).

We look forward to help the Family House celebrate their 7th anniversary in October 2027."

"What a tremendous asset the LJ and Bannister Family Houses are to UCSDH. As Chuck mentioned, we had the chance not only to prepare some food for the residents but were able to spend some time hearing their stories and sharing in their healthcare journey.

I had the pleasure of meeting two unique patients and their caregivers last night, both of whom recently had heart transplants. Incredibly moving stories...And there were many others willing to share their insights with friends and family surrounding them. It reminded me of how important and incredible our pharmacy team is. Inpatient Pharmacy to Outpatient Pharmacy, it is a connected story of success.

Through your generous contributions we not only raised enough money to pay for all of the food but added a $350 donation to the Family House for their future needs. And there were enough leftovers for many days to come.

Huge Shoutout for our Pharmacy Residents! They rocked it this year. And Tiffany Ong for leading that effort."

The party doesn't stop! To continue celebrating 6 years of La Jolla Family House, we finished the evening with Hosted Dinner for all the guests under our roof. Thanks to the Department of Pharmacy, we were able to feed dozens of guests a Fall Picnic, with birthday cake, of course!

What a whirlwind of a celebration!

To kick off La Jolla Family House's 6th Birthday, we held an Open House Ice Cream Social!

We had dozens of UC San Diego, UC San Diego Health, and Care Team members in attendance, alongside our families, to learn about our home away from home!

From house, apartment and guest room tours, to snacks, prizes, resources, and more, we made sure everyone left with information and a smile on their face 😄

By attending our open house, these incredible team members are the best possible advocates for patients and families, knowledgeable about all the ways we house, feed, and support those with a loved one in the hospital.

We look forward to partnering with each of the day's attendees in the weeks and months to come, to ensure that as many families and patients as possible receive world-class care at UC San Diego Health.

Meet Gerry & Maria - these grateful guests are excited to be discharged and able to travel back home after a several month stay, recovering from a transplant. We are truly thankful to have been their home away from home for many weeks while they continued on their care journey. They shared kind words with all our team and made so many new friends with the other guests while they shared similar experiences. We hope they come back to visit soon!

Earlier this month, we were invited to join UC San Diego Faculty and Staff Christian Fellowship to table at the UCSD Staff Summer Celebration! This generous organization creates thoughtfully-filled Welcome Bags for the families under our roof, and they even stop by to host meals too!

We spent the day letting staff members know about Family Houses and how to volunteer, and we look forward to their next Welcome Bag delivery! We are grateful for each and every partnership that supports families in the hospital.

La Jolla Family House provides a home away from home for families with a loved one in long-term or critical care at UC San Diego Health.

Within walking distance of our medical facilities in La Jolla, our guests can experience all the comforts of home — a place to rest, a kitchen to prep meals or enjoy a volunteer-hosted meal, a spot to do laundry, and community spaces where guests can interact with other families experiencing similar challenges.
