Our 4th Annual Taste of Home was an inspiring reminder of what is possible when a community comes together around a shared purpose. Surrounded by good food and even better company, guests heard directly from Habitat homeowners about what having a home has meant for their families, learned about the work ahead from our President & CEO Kwofi Reed, and signed planter boxes that will be gifted to our newest homeowners as they turn the key on a new beginning.

This year, we honored 13 families who achieved homeownership through San Diego Habitat for Humanity, and with 8 more families set to move in this year, the momentum is only growing. These moments are made possible by people who believe everyone deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home.

Big news for affordable homeownership in California!🏡

AB 939 has successfully passed the Senate Housing Committee and is one step closer to becoming law. This legislation would help qualified nonprofit affordable housing organizations like Habitat for Humanity purchase affordable for-sale homes created through the Density Bonus Law and connect them more quickly with income-qualified homebuyers.

San Diego Habitat was proud to help champion this effort from the very beginning, working alongside partners across California to advance practical solutions that help ensure affordable homes do not sit vacant and instead find their way to the families who need them most.

This week, our President & CEO, Kwofi Reed, was in Sacramento to provide testimony in support of AB 939. While there is still work ahead before the bill reaches the Governor’s desk, this milestone marks important progress toward expanding homeownership opportunities for more working San Diegans and families across our state.

Thank you to our advocacy partners, elected leaders, and Habitat affiliates whose support helped advance this important legislation.

A heartfelt thank you to Voya, Cotality, Cozen O’Connor, and PLSA Engineering for bringing their creativity, teamwork, and community spirit to our Playhouse Builds during the month of May! 🛠️🏡✨

Their teams helped create vibrant playhouses that will soon bring joy, imagination, and safe spaces to children across San Diego County. These special creations will be delivered to local families and child care centers, where they’ll spark smiles and lasting memories for years to come.

June is National Homeownership Month, and affordable homeownership needs to be on California’s to-do list.

✅ Build more homes families can afford to own
✅ Preserve affordable homeownership opportunities
✅ Invest in proven programs that help working families build stability
✅ Restore funding for CalHome

As final state budget negotiations continue, we need one more strong push to make sure CalHome is included in the final 2026–27 State Budget. CalHome is California’s only state program dedicated to the production and preservation of affordable homes for ownership. But the Governor’s May Revise included no funding for it.

This National Homeownership Month, help us send a clear message: California must invest in homes families can afford to own. Take action today and urge state leaders to include $500 million for CalHome in the final budget.

California’s budget negotiations are in the final stretch and affordable homeownership funding is on the line.

With the Governor’s May Revise released, the Administration and Legislature are now making final decisions about what will be included in the 2026–27 State Budget. We need to make sure CalHome is part of it.

CalHome is California’s only state program dedicated to the production and preservation of affordable homes for ownership. Without renewed funding, shovel-ready affordable homeownership projects across the state could stall.
