Compassion it Compassion It makes compassion a verb. We are a nonprofit and global movement whose mission is to inspire daily compassionate actions and attitudes.

We envision a world where compassion is practiced by every person, for every person, on every day. Through training and tools, we make compassion accessible and scalable. We work with individuals and organizations to create more compassionate homes, communities, workplaces, and systems. We've reached thousands of people of all walks of life - from inmates to big tech leaders.

I'm grateful for the opportunity to work with the wonderful team at PAWS of Coronado. The work they do matters so much, and it's INCREDIBLY CHALLENGING.

I led our four-week compassion training series, which focuses on mindfulness, self-compassion, common humanity, and active compassion. The course focuses on creating more engaged teams who know how to be a little more vulnerable with each other and care for each other.

Here's a comment from one of the participants after the course, "Sara presented this course in a way that the whole group got involved and now understand what compassion means and how we can apply it to our everyday lives."

Thank you PAWS of Coronado for your commitment to compassion!

(Sara Schairer)

In March, PAWS of Coronado partnered with compassion expert Sara Schairer for a series on combating compassion fatigue—an important issue in animal welfare. The partnership also included a special session for our Board of Directors.
Sara, founder of Compassion It® and author of A Case for Compassion, shares practical tools to turn compassion into action—for others and ourselves. 💙🐾

We teach people how to
• pause instead of react
• connect instead of withdraw
• care for themselves so they can care for others

It's simple, powerful, and needed more than ever.

Day 6 of Giving Two Sh*ts

Today let's care about our vulnerable youth.

Every child deserves safety, stability, and a future they can believe in.

But many young people in San Diego are facing homelessness, trauma, family conflict, mental health challenges, abuse, or involvement in systems that make life even harder.

San Diego Youth Services provides the support these youth need through safe housing, counseling, crisis intervention, education and job programs, and community spaces with trusted adults. Their work helps youth heal, stay in school, stay housed, and move toward healthy independence.

When I taught compassion at San Diego’s maximum security prison, the men in my class shared stories of childhoods filled with trauma. Every story reminded me how deeply young people need compassion and support long before things escalate.

Day 5 of our Giving Two Sh*ts Day Campaign
💩 💩= ❤️

We are you asking you to care about opportunity for ALL.

In case you haven't been paying attention, it's a challenging time to be doing work that advances and supports diversity, equity, and inclusion.

We all need to be giving wayyyy more than two sh*ts about that.

Today we're highlighting the BIPOC Support Foundation, a nonprofit organization advancing educational equity, environmental justice, youth empowerment, and mental wellbeing for historically underserved communities.

What sets BSF apart? Their holistic approach to youth development, integrating not just academics but also social-emotional learning, cultural pride, and outdoor experiences that connect students to their environment and heritage.

Their programs help students build confidence, strengthen literacy and academic skills, cultivate environmental stewardship, and grow into community leaders.

Day 4 of Giving Two Sh*ts is dedicated to PAWS of Coronado.

They’re a community partner rooted in compassion, connection, and care for both animals and people.

When I asked PAWS what they needed most, the answer was clear.
Shelters are overcrowded.
Animals are stressed.
They need fosters more than ever.

I adopted my dog Norman in 2019 and he filled Hannah’s and my life with so much joy. His snuggles were unmatched, and we miss him every day. Supporting PAWS feels like honoring him and helping other animals find the love he gave us.

Day 3 of Giving Two Sh*ts Day!

Today we're asking you to care about RACIAL INEQUITY.

Black Friday is full of deals, but here’s a story worth more than anything in your cart.

Right after George Floyd was murdered, Sister Cities Project founder Shawn McClondon shared a post in his mostly white community. He wrote:

“If anyone is interested in having access to a black person, wants to get to know someone who is black, wants to talk to someone who’s black, wants to have a relationship or even become friends with someone that is black, please contact me.”

He was booked solid for three weeks.

What he learned was heartbreaking but honest. People are often well-intentioned and kind, but still held serious misconceptions and misunderstandings about Black people.

From those conversations, Sister Cities Project was born.

Today, Sister Cities Project create cross-community partnerships, builds trust where history has broken it, directs resources where they’re overdue, and makes equity a lived reality.

No coupon code required.

Just compassion, commitment, and more than two sh*ts given.

Support their noble work today by giving two bills ($5x2, $10x2, $100x2), sharing their mission, and spreading the word.

Day 2 of our Giving Two Sh*ts Campaign — and it lands on Thanksgiving.

What better day to talk about connection and belonging?

Not everyone has a full table today.
Not everyone has family.
Not everyone feels seen.

That’s why we’re highlighting Longer Tables, an organization helping people create meaningful gatherings and build real community.

Day 1 of our Giving Two Sh*ts Campaign!💩💩

Today: Give Two Sh*ts about our Criminal Justice System.

You want to know what stinks?
Our broken criminal justice system.

And yes… I’m being funny on purpose — because this topic deserves real attention.

Luckily, Prison Yoga Project gives two sh*ts about rehabilitation and healing (not punishment).

Why should we care?
Punitive incarceration doesn’t keep us safer. It adds more harm — for incarcerated people, communities, victims, and the people who work in the system every day.

So how does PYP “clean up” after a broken system?
With yoga, mindfulness, compassion, and community.

Years ago, I partnered with PYP to offer compassion training at the women’s jail in San Diego. So many participants told me how deeply PYP impacted them. They felt supported in community, they learned emotional regulation skills, and they increased their capacity to have compassion for others.

That’s the power of trauma-informed, body-based practices.

PYP’s mission:
To bring trauma-informed, body-centered practices into prisons and jails so people can build resilience, self-regulation, accountability, and connection.

Last week I had a cheeky idea for GivingTuesday, and I've been working frantically to pull it off.

Drumroll please...

Compassion It is launching a 7-day series leading up to Giving Tuesday (Dec 2). Each day we'll highlight an important issue AND featuring a nonprofit doing great work.

And because I love wordplay (hence the name of this org), here’s how my brainstorm went:

Giving Tuesday → Giving Twos Day → Giving Two Sh*ts Day.💩

Yep. 😂

Since people say “I don’t give two sh*ts” when they really don’t care, I thought… What if we flipped that around?

Giving Two Sh*ts Day = choosing to care deeply.

This week, we’ll be posting different opportunities for you to not only CARE about something that matters… but to GIVE in ways that feel meaningful and generous.

Of course, this doesn’t involve literally giving anything gross. 😉
Just compassion. Action. Generosity. Community.

I just published a post about the remarkable and unexpected community that formed five years ago. I am forever grateful for it!

Here's how it starts...

If you rewind to early March of 2020, you might remember that COVID-19 had descended upon Italy with its full force. I watched with disbelief as I saw online images and videos of terrified Italians holed up in their apartments. At the time, I could never imagine what it would be like to be on lockdown. Of course I had no idea that one week later, we Americans would be in the same boat…but with an ocean between us.

My dear friend, Alessandro Giannandrea, reached out and asked if we could work together to support his fellow Italians. As a clinical psychologist, college professor, and mindfulness instructor in Pescara, Italy, Alessandro was well-suited to step up and soothe the suffering of his community. Of course I jumped at the chance to help. As a compassion facilitator and the founder of the nonprofit Compassion it, I would have done almost anything to feel something other than utterly helpless in that moment.
