Did you know that women face a higher risk of stroke? In the U.S., 1 in 5 women will have a stroke, and it is the third largest cause of death in women. Stroke increases in women who are pregnant, have preeclampsia, take birth control pills, use hormone replacement therapy, have migraines with aura and also smoke, or have atrial fibrillation (AFib). You can decrease your risk of stroke in several ways:

• Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially those high in potassium, such as apples, bananas, apricots, oranges, cantaloupe, avocados, potatoes, sweet potatoes, spinach, zucchini and tomatoes.
• If you are pregnant, discuss the option of taking low-dose aspirin beginning in the second trimester to lower preeclampsia risk.
• If you are pregnant and have high blood pressure, talk with your doctor to determine the safest medication.
• Get your blood pressure checked before taking birth control pills and monitor it every six months.
• Review the risk and benefits of hormone replacement therapy with your doctor to decide if the benefits outweigh the risks.
• Quit smoking.
• Get screened for atrial fibrillation.
