🩺🐾 Medical Monday: Meet Blade! A 4 year old, Male, Cane Corso Mix.

Today, we are shining a spotlight on Blade, a big, sweet boy with an even bigger heart! Blade seems to love everyone he meets! He’s happy, affectionate, and always ready to make new friends. He’s also a strong boy, so he’ll need an adopter comfortable handling him on leash. Blade is ok with other dogs, and we think with proper introduction that he could live with a cat. We would especially love to see Blade find a home with Cane Corso experience, where his adopter can provide the structure, guidance, and love he deserves.

When Blade arrived at our shelter, he was underweight and in less-than-ideal condition. He’s been gaining weight under our care and working toward becoming his best self. His ears were also unfortunately cropped very poorly before he came to us. Despite everything he’s been through, Blade remains a happy, incredibly sweet boy.

But there’s one more thing you should know about Blade: he is heartworm positive. And that brings us to today’s medical lesson!

🦟 DID YOU KNOW IT ONLY TAKES ONE BITE FROM AN INFECTED MOSQUITO TO TRANSMIT HEARTWORMS TO YOUR DOG?

Heartworm disease is caused by parasitic worms that live in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels. Left untreated, it can cause serious damage and even be fatal. The good news? Heartworm disease is largely preventable!

Here’s how you can protect your furry family members:

🐾 Keep up with preventatives! Give your dog veterinarian-recommended heartworm prevention as directed. Ask your vet about products that also protect against fleas and ticks.

🐾 Stay consistent year-round! Even indoor dogs can be exposed to infected mosquitoes, and missed doses can leave your dog vulnerable.

🐾 Schedule regular veterinary testing! Routine heartworm testing can identify infections, even before your dog shows obvious symptoms.

🩵 AND WHAT ABOUT BLADE?

We don’t want Blade's diagnosis to stand in the way of his happily-furever-after!

✨ Heartworm-positive dogs are NOT contagious to other dogs or people.
✨ With appropriate veterinary care, many dogs go on to live long, happy lives.
✨ HSWC will provide Blade’s heartworm treatment at no additional cost to his adopter!

🐾 Senior Sunday: Meet Sammy & Katie! 🐶😸
Sammy is a 13 year old, Male, Pomeranian/Corgi Mix.
Katie is a 12 year old, Female, Domestic Short Hair.

Sammy and Katie have spent their whole lives together, but through no fault of their own, they now find themselves looking for a new place to call home. Their beloved owner had to enter a nursing home, leaving these two sweet companions facing a big change in their lives. They are hoping someone will open their heart and home to them for the next chapter of their lives.

Sweet Sammy is an easygoing gentleman who enjoys the simple things in life. He's happy doing his own thing and enjoying the company of his people. He's done well with children, dogs, and cats, although he'd much rather enjoy his own space than interact with other animals. At this stage in his life, Sammy isn't asking for much — just a soft place to land, a cozy spot to rest, and a family to love him through his golden years.

Katie is a certified sweetheart who would be perfectly content curled up in your lap! Our staff has even discovered that she enjoys listening to Lady Gaga and being held while dancing along to the music. This girl knows how to enjoy the finer things in life, and all she needs is someone willing to share those sweet moments with her!

We would absolutely LOVE to see Sammy and Katie find a home together after spending their entire lives by each other's side. 🩵 There's something so special about giving longtime companions the chance to stay together, especially when they've already experienced such a significant change in their lives.

That said, we know the most important thing is making sure BOTH Sammy and Katie find loving furever homes. If the right families come along separately, we would be happy to help them each begin their next chapter in a home of their own.
