Since 1922, the Civitan Club of Salisbury has brought together local people who want to make their community a better place to live, work and raise families.

The Civitan Club of Salisbury (Club #80) was founded August 15, 1922 - just five years after the creation of the original Civitan Club in Birmingham, Alabama - by a group of local businessmen who decided to join together to improve our local community. Civitans are especially involved in Special Olympics events, but we participate in, volunteer for and help to raise money to support charitable activities of all kinds through our club and individually. Today's program was presented by David Post, who is the local coordinator of the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program at Rufty Holmes Senior Center. They help hundreds of local seniors file their taxes each year, and have been recognized as one of the best run VITA programs in the country.

What a special meeting we had today. Our speaker was legendary basketball player Phil Ford. Phil was the first freshman under Dean Smith to ever start his first collegiate game. At UNC, he was a 3-time All American and was selected as the National Player of the Year in 1978. He helped team USA win an Olympic Gold Medal at the 1976 games in Montreal. He was a first round draft pick into the NBA and was selected as the league's Rookie of the Year in 1979. Phil will also be joining us at our club's 51st annual golf tournament tomorrow.

What a great day to be a Civitan! Today we inducted 5 new members, making the Civitan Club of Salisbury the largest Civitan club in the world! We also recognized the Junior Civitan clubs in our area which earned the honor of Clubs of Distinction last year.

Each year during the week of September 11th, our club recognizes a local hero; a person who goes the extra mile to help someone in danger. This year, we honored Harry Glass with our Ernest Curtis Hero Award. Ernest Curtis was a Salisbury Civitan, who created a legacy by endowing this annual award shortly after the events of September 11, 2001.
On October 26, 2025, Harry Glass pulled into the parking lot of a local Cook Out restaurant, where he observed a man fighting with the staff at the door. When a Salisbury police officer arrived, the man became more combative and pulled out a box cutter knife. Seeing that the officer was in danger, Mr. Glass instinctively joined the fray, attempting to help subdue the perpetrator. Shortly thereafter, another officer arrived and the attacker was arrested, but not before Mr. Glass and one of the officers sustained serious injuries from the knife. https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/good-samaritan-recalls-saving-officer-233140117.html

The program at this week's meeting was presented by Dr. Delaine Fowler, CEO of Accelerate Therapy & Performance. She educated the club about the importance of movement for older adults. By focusing on movement, we can reduce the possibility of future injury. So get out there and walk more, walk faster and just keep moving.

Several members of our club helped to install new front and back steps on a local residence. It had been years since the homeowner could use their front door, due to the hazardous condition of the front steps. "My hands do the work of the world, and reach out in service to others."
