Community schools are an important part of Maryland's public education system. They are regular public schools with additional resources designed to support students, families, and school communities beyond the classroom. The idea is simple: students learn better when the barriers outside school are addressed too.

Our last (but not least!) figure for Transgender History Month is L Morgan Lee!

L Morgan Lee is a Maryland native who grew up in the suburbs of the state and went on to make Broadway history. In 2022, Lee became the first openly transgender actor to receive a Tony Award nomination for her performance in the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical A Strange Loop.

Her achievement marked a watershed moment for transgender representation on Broadway and in American theater at large. She said in an interview, “The minute I was honest with the world about who I am, all of a sudden, it’s as if the world began to see me.”

Lee's journey from a Maryland upbringing to Broadway's biggest stage is an inspiring chapter in the state's history of transgender trailblazers.

“So many cases look like neglect but are really poverty.”

Last month, a 23-year-old Aberdeen mother was arrested and charged with child neglect after police found her 3 and 5-year-old daughters home alone. The mother admitted she left them home alone because she couldn’t afford childcare. The children are now in custody of Child Protective Services, and the mother is being held without bond.

As our partner Shanta Trivedi, an associate professor of law and faculty director of the Sayra and Neil Meyerhoff Center for Family, Children and the Courts at the University of Baltimore said, "Most moms don’t want to leave their kids alone.
I don’t think she left them because she thought it was a good idea,” Trivedi said. “She did what she had to do to put food in their mouths.”
