Our youth took the lead in learning about zine-making, the important role of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, and how these waterways have changed over time, with artist Ngọc Đoàn. We’re proud to see young people using creativity to explore environmental issues and share their voices with the community.

Ngọc Đoàn is a Minnesota based comic artist. She currently works at Smart Set, Inc. as a digital print technician helping folks with their printing needs in South Minneapolis. Ngoc has a passion for telling compelling stories and creating interesting page layouts, from slice of life coming of age stories, to fantasy action adventures. She also enjoys late night snacks. Our Youth Arts & Environmental Leadership Group explored how colonialism has shaped the global distribution of plants. Guided by artist Sophie Wang, the youth learned printmaking techniques and created their own botanical-themed prints inspired by these ideas. 🌿🎨

Sophie Wang (or Shuf, she/her) is a researcher, educator, artist, and zine maker currently based in the Twin Cities. She makes zines, comics, and other forms of art that bring a critical power lens to science, technology, epistemology, and knowledge-making, as well as other themes like labor history, immigration, and liberatory celebration.
