Let’s meet the composer and performer on this Month’s Vanguard New Music Series Concert - Aaron Kerr

Aaron Kerr is a cellist and composer from St. Paul, whose music is a cross between jazz, minimalist classical, and rock. He performs as a soloist and with many artists and ensembles in the Twin Cities. Aaron's music can be found on over fifty albums nationally and internationally, including several solo albums.

Here are some of his pieces on the program:

Aaron Kerr’s Sketches for Cello and Piano is a five movement piece composed and performed over three decades ago by the composer. It won a national award at the Music Teacher’s National Conference in 1995 and was performed at their convention in Cincinnati. The music represents Aaron’s early neo classic designs in composing before his minimalist and tone cluster stage of musical works.

Let’s meet the composer and performer on this Month’s Vanguard New Music Series Concert - Andrew Cannestra

Pianist and composer Andrew Cannestra maintains an active performance schedule as both a soloist and a sought-after chamber musician and collaborator. He has recorded solo albums on the Naxos (2025) and Aeolian Classics (2022) labels. As a composer, his works have been performed across the United States and abroad by performers such as the Milwaukee Symphony and the Artaria String Quartet. Currently, he serves as piano faculty at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN.

Liminal Spaces (2026) was inspired by the unsettling and surreal feeling of finding oneself in a transitional space, either physical or imagined, losing all objective sense of the passage of time. I attempt to capture this feeling of being suspended through the different stages of experiencing a liminal space: beginning from anxiety-inducing disorientation and moving to a trance-like state for much of the rest of the work. Each movement continues without pause, and the exact boundaries of each of the final three should not be apparent to the listener.

Let’s meet the performer on this month’s Vanguard New Music Series Concert - Jessica Znaniecki

Jessica Znaniecki is a dedicated flutist trained in both traditional and contemporary
repertoire. She earned her Bachelor's degree under the study of Dr. John McMurtery at the
University of Las Vegas, as well as recently graduating with her Master’s at the University of
Minnesota as a student of Immanuel Davis.
In addition to performance, Jessica values continual growth as a musician and artist,
drawing inspiration from collaboration, study, and live performance experiences. She is currently
based in Minneapolis and is a member of the Grand Symphonic Winds under the direction of Dr.
Matthew George.
