The presence of a Greek Orthodox church in St Augustine, Florida, is a wonderful and unique blend of history -- that of the first Greek Americans to arrive in the New World, and the rich tradition of the earliest and original Christian church. The history of Orthodox Christianity goes back to the Apostles of Jesus Christ. Though that first colony of Greeks, Minorcans and Italians ultimately failed, those that survived moved from New Smyrna north to St Augustine. Those Greek residents practiced their faith in various places, including the building that now houses the St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine in the old city area of St Augustine. As more Greeks moved to north Florida in the 1900’s, there was initially no formal Greek Orthodox church in St Augustine. However, as the number of Greek Orthodox families in the area grew, they organized and incorporated a Hellenic Society, which eventually raised enough money to purchase a small church in downtown St Augustine in 1976. Looking to the future, the parish purchased property on County Road 214, five miles west of downtown, and built a new church, social hall and classrooms in 2007.

3rd Sunday of Matthew (Lay Not Up for Yourselves Treasures)
Some thoughts

Today’s Gospel reading, dear brothers and sisters, is more relevant than ever. In short, it speaks about the relationship between human beings and material goods. You see, people were—and remain—the same in their essence, no matter the time or place in which they live. A person is anxious and feels insecure about today and about tomorrow. Everyday life, even while solving some problems, creates new ones. It makes us feel new needs and new insecurities, all of which reveal nothing but our inner emptiness. Instead of searching for the cause of this emptiness and healing it, we try to cover it with material things. But can inner emptiness be filled with material goods? Certainly not. When a person finds God, loves Him, and unites with Him, the soul has everything; it lacks nothing.

People become enslaved to the pursuit of comfort and the accumulation of material goods at the expense of the one thing that matters: their relationship with God. The Lord, pointing out this truth, teaches us: “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” Let us pay attention to the word He uses: “He will hold to the one.” When a person loves someone, he is able to stand by him. Because a person may need to give up certain pleasures. He may need to show patience and self-denial. Just as it happens within a family. How many sacrifices do family members make when there is true love among them?

The Lord shows us the right direction: Do not worry, He says, with anxiety and sorrow about your life—what you will eat, what you will drink, what you will wear, or how you will adorn yourself. The Lord does not say we should not work. He does not say we should neglect our health. On the contrary, in His parables He uses examples of working people and of people who turn to medical care when needed. The newly enlightened Christians, hearing the new teaching, accepted it with enthusiasm and thought they had to apply it literally in every way, ignoring the spirit of the teaching. The Apostle Paul, however, brings them back to order. Speaking to the Christians of his time, he strongly emphasizes that if anyone is unwilling to work, neither should he eat. Everyone seeks to have a good insurance plan—and rightly so. But the prudent person knows that his true safety and security are in God’s hands.

So in today’s age, when people have replaced God’s providence with material goods—placing their security for life and the future in their possessions and in their “right” choices—the Lord asks us to review our lives. God knows, as Christ assures us, what we truly need. Just as a child asks his father for many things, but the father knows the child’s real needs and seeks to meet those first.

And one more thing: what is needed is a true relationship with God and with our fellow human beings. This relationship grants the Kingdom of God, and it is the “first and foremost” thing that people must seek. And when they place this “first” in their soul, then truly the Lord will add to them all the essential things they need, and they will feel that they lack nothing—they have everything. And they will feel that the words of the Lord apply to each of them as well, just as they apply to all the people of God, the people who are saved: “All that you need will be added to you, and you will be full of blessing and grace.”

Επίκαιρο περισσότερο από ποτέ το σημερινό Ευαγγελικό ανάγνωσμα, αγαπητοί αδελφοί και αδελφές. Επιγραμματικά θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε ότι αναφέρεται στη σχέση του ανθρώπου με τα υλικά αγαθά. Βλέπετε, ο άνθρωπος στην ουσία του ήταν και είναι ίδιος. Ανεξάρτητα από την εποχή αλλά και τον τόπο όπου ζει. Αγχώνεται, αισθάνεται έλλειψη σιγουριάς για την σημερινή αλλά και την επόμενη ημέρα. Η καθημερινή ζωή, ενώ του λύνει κάποια προβλήματα, ταυτόχρονα του δημιουργεί άλλα. Τον κάνει να αισθάνεται νέες ανάγκες και ανασφάλειες. Οι οποίες πρακτικά δεν αποδεικνύουν τίποτα άλλο παρά το ψυχικό κενό του. Αντί λοιπόν ο άνθρωπος να αναζητήσει και να θεραπεύσει την αιτία του κενού, προσπαθεί να το καλύψει με υλικά μέσα. Είναι όμως δυνατόν το ψυχικό κενό να καλυφθεί με υλικά αγαθά; Ασφαλώς και όχι. Όταν ο άνθρωπος βρει τον Θεό, τον αγαπήσει και ενωθεί μαζί του, η ψυχή τα έχει όλα, δεν της λείπει τίποτα.

Ο άνθρωπος υποδουλώνεται στην αναζήτηση των ανέσεων, στην απόκτηση υλικών αγαθών σε βάρος του ενός. Το οποίο είναι η σχέση με τον Θεό. Ο Κύριος, επισημαίνοντας αυτή την αλήθεια, διδάσκει: «Κανένας άνθρωπος δεν μπορεί να υπηρετήσει δύο αφέντες: γιατί είτε θα μισήσει τον ένα, και θα αγαπήσει τον άλλο, ή, το λέει διαφορετικά, θα αντέξει τον ένα και θα περιφρονήσει τον άλλο. Δεν μπορείς να υπηρετήσεις τον Θεό και τον μαμωνά. Ας προσέξουμε την λέξη που χρησιμοποιεί. «Θα αντέξει τον ένα». Όταν τον αγαπήσει θα αντέξει να μείνει κοντά του. Γιατί ίσως χρειαστεί να στερηθεί κάποιες απολαύσεις. Ίσως χρειαστεί να δείξει υπομονή και αυταπάρνηση. Όπως γίνεται μέσα στην οικογένεια. Σε πόσες θυσίες δεν προχωρούν τα μέλη της οικογένειας όταν υπάρχει αληθινή αγάπη μεταξύ τους!

Ο Κύριος, μας δείχνει τον σωστό προσανατολισμό: Μη φροντίζετε, συνεχίζει , με αγωνία και στενοχώρια για τη ζωή σας, τι θα φάτε και τι θα πιείτε, τι θα φορέσετε και πώς θα καλλωπιστείτε. Δεν λέει να μην εργαζόμαστε. Δεν λέει να μη φροντίζουμε την υγεία μας. Το αντίθετο, στις παραβολές Του χρησιμοποιεί παραδείγματα εργατικών ανθρώπων και ανθρώπων που καταφεύγουν στην ιατρική επιστήμη, όπου απαιτείται. Οι νεοφώτιστοι Χριστιανοί ακούγοντας τη νέα διδασκαλία, την δέχθηκαν με ενθουσιασμό και νόμισαν ότι έπρεπε να την εφαρμόσουν κατά γράμμα, παραβλέποντας το πνεύμα της διδασκαλίας. Ο Απόστολος Παύλος όμως, τους επαναφέρει στην τάξη. Και μιλώντας στους Χριστιανούς της εποχής του, αυστηρά τονίζει ότι όποιος δεν θέλει να εργάζεται, ούτε να τρώει. Καθένας επιδιώκει να έχει ένα καλό ασφαλιστικό πρόγραμμα, και καλά κάνει. Αλλά ο σώφρων άνθρωπος γνωρίζει ότι η ασφάλεια και η βεβαιότητά του, βρίσκονται στα χέρια του Θεού.

Στην σημερινή λοιπόν εποχή, όπου ο άνθρωπος έχει υποκαταστήσει την πρόνοια του Θεού με τα υλικά αγαθά, την σιγουριά για τη ζωή και το μέλλον στο απόθεμά τους αλλά και στις «σωστές του» επιλογές, ο Κύριος μας ζητάει να προχωρήσουμε σε μια αναθεώρηση της ζωής. Ο Θεός γνωρίζει, όπως διαβεβαιώνει ο Χριστός, τι πραγματικά έχουμε ανάγκη. Όπως ένα παιδάκι που ζητάει διάφορα από τον πατέρα του. Εκείνος όμως ξέρει ποιες είναι οι ουσιαστικές ανάγκες του παιδιού και αυτές θέλει να καλύψει. Και ακόμα κάτι. Αυτό που έχει ανάγκη είναι η αληθινή σχέση με τον Θεό και τον συνάνθρωπο, εκείνα δηλαδή που δίνουν την Βασιλεία του Θεού, και είναι το «πρώτον» που ο άνθρωπος χρειάζεται να αναζητήσει. Και όταν βάλει στην ψυχή του αυτό το «πρώτον τότε, αληθινά, ο Κύριος θα του προσθέσει όλα τα ουσιαστικά, που πραγματικά χρειάζεται και θα νιώσει ότι δεν του λείπει τίποτα, τα έχει όλα. Και θα αισθανθεί ότι ισχύουν και για τον ίδιο τα λόγια του Κυρίου. Ό,τι νιώθουν οι άνθρωποι του Θεού, οι άνθρωποι που σώζονται: «Όλα αυτά, που έχετε ανάγκη, θα σας προστεθούν, και θα είστε πλήρεις ευλογίας και χάριτος». Αμήν.

The Hellenic Society of St. Augustine honored its founders at Holy Trinity. The society was founded in 1970 and was instrumental in starting Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Its members hosted the first "Greek Nite" in St. Augustine in 1973, purchased the original Holy Trinity Church (at 7 Waldo Street), and participated in opening of the new church doors twenty years ago. A memorial service was offered for the Hellenic Society founders, and coffee hour was sponsored by Mrs. Vasso Poulos.
