Free speaker event TONIGHT at the Waterworks, hosted by Historic Coast Culture!

Martin Dobrow, author and history professor at Springfield College in Massachusetts, is leading a discussion about his newest book, Original City, Original Sin (published through Cambridge University Press).

When: Monday, October 26 at 5:30 pm
Where: The Waterworks @ 184 San Marco Ave, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: Free!

About the Book:
"A Klan rally where four Black men were almost burned alive. A hotel manager pouring acid into a pool to chase out Black swimmers. Brutal assaults of peaceful demonstrators at the site of a former slave market downtown. A shooting into the cottage rented for Martin Luther King, Jr. Each form part of a rarely told and riveting story of civil rights in the nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine, Florida. At the height of his fame, King found his treasured doctrine of nonviolence challenged as never before-all as the fate of the Civil Rights Act, the most consequential legislation of the twentieth century, hung in the balance. In this intimate exploration based on hundreds of interviews, Martin Dobrow introduces an extraordinary collection of idealists-Black and white, young and old, gay and straight-who were drawn into the movement, putting their lives on the line for racial justice."

Please join the LMCC as we celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day! On this day (and every day), we honor the lasting bonds forged between the Indigenous and African communities in what eventually became St. Augustine, Florida.

Long before our city was founded, this land was home to the Timucua, whose ancestors lived along Florida’s rivers and coast for thousands of years. They fished the tidal marshes, gathered shellfish, grew corn, beans, and squash, and built thriving towns led by local chiefs. In 1565, the Spanish landed at the Timucua village of Seloy, part of the Saturiwa chiefdom. Colonization devastated Timucua communities over the next two centuries, but their influence remains a part of St. Augustine's culture and legacy.

In 1738, Africans who escaped slavery in the Carolinas built Fort Mose just north of town. This was the first legally recognized free Black settlement in what is now the United States. Its community included Indigenous families and allies. In the years that followed, many Black Floridians found freedom alongside the Seminole people. Among these communities were the people later known as Black Seminoles, demonstrating how Black Floridians and Indigenous groups not only coexisted, but they established enduring communities, working relationships, allyships, and families.

Today we celebrate the Indigenous and African roots that run through St. Augustine, and we are grateful to everyone in our community who kept, and continues to keep, these stories alive. To learn more, come visit us at the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center! Open 7 days a week, Tues-Sat 10:30 - 4:30 and Sun-Mon 1-4:30.

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!

Please join us in wishing Dr. Dorothy H. Israel a happy 102nd birthday!

Dr. Israel was born in Harlem during the time of the Harlem Renaissance, the only child of Mr. Ernest Headley and Mrs. Lily Headley. She has published several books, including "From Harlem to the Sea," "Tales from a Colored Girl," and "The Courageous Women of Mose" (a screenplay that she performs in herself!)

Prior to moving to St. Augustine in 1994, Dr. Israel served in the Caribbean Federation of Mental Health, National Association of Social Workers, and as a professor at State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Nowadays, she serves as the Historian for the Friends of Lincolnville and a member of the Fort Mose Historical Society Executive Board. She continues to be an avid writer and poet.

Let us all thank Dr. Israel for her life of service -- and for sharing her knowledge, light, and spirit with our community.

Happy 904 Day! 🎉

Today we're celebrating what makes our area code special, and no conversation about the 904 is complete without the historic Lincolnville neighborhood in St. Augustine. Founded by formerly enslaved men and women, alongside soldiers from the U.S. Colored Troops of Florida and South Carolina, Lincolnville has roots that run deep in the 904. Like many Black communities of the era, it was first known as "Little Africa." After Abraham Lincoln's death, residents renamed it in his honor.

If you walk the streets of Lincolnville today, you are experiencing living history. In Lincolnville, prominent businessman Frank Butler ran the Palace Market on Washington St., a successful neighborhood institution. Students learned at the Excelsior School, the first Black high school in St. Johns County that now houses the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center. Ray Charles once played at local venues that are now restaurants and residences. And in the 1960s, Martin Luther King Jr. marched through these very streets, including a boulevard that now bears his name, bringing national attention to the violent racism in St. Augustine that led to the Civil Rights Act.

Come celebrate the 904 with us this Labor Day weekend! Learn more about St. Augustine’s historic Black neighborhood at the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center! Open Tues-Sat 10:30 - 4:30 and Sun-Mon 1:00 - 4:30. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and military, $5 for students and kids aged 7-17, and free for kids under 5. Link in bio!
