PACE is more than a model of care. For thousands of California families, it’s personal.

In a new Capitol Weekly op-ed, Assemblymember Jose Luis Solache shares his family’s experience with PACE and the difference it has made for his 74-year-old father, from coordinated care and meaningful social connection to the ability to continue living independently in the community he calls home.

The piece came together through collaboration between Assemblymember Solache, AltaMed Health Services, and CalPACE, with CalPACE and AltaMed working closely to help bring greater visibility to the PACE model and the experiences of the older adults and families it serves.

We’re grateful to Assemblymember Solache for sharing his family’s story, to AltaMed for its partnership, and to everyone who helped bring this important perspective to a broader audience.

Today is International Day of Older Persons.

Growing older should never mean losing connection, purpose, independence, or a voice in how you live and receive care. Across California, PACE organizations help older adults continue living in the communities they call home, surrounded by the people, routines, and relationships that matter to them.

Today, we celebrate older adults, the experiences and wisdom they bring to our communities, and the people who work every day to ensure aging is met with dignity, care, and connection. Because every older adult deserves to age with the support they need, and a life that continues to feel like their own.

PACE happens because of people. Behind every participant is a team of people working together to make PACE possible.

Across California, physicians and nurses, social workers and therapists, drivers and dietitians, enrollment and operations teams, care coordinators, activity staff, and so many others bring their expertise, compassion, and commitment to PACE every day.

As National PACE Month comes to a close, CalPACE wants to say thank you to the people across our member organizations who make this model work.

Thank you for the care you provide.
Thank you for the connections you build.
Thank you for helping older adults live with greater independence, dignity, and support in the communities they call home.

CalPACE CEO, Val Sheehan, joined the leadership of Center for Elders' Independence as they hosted a tour of their Oakland PACE center for the Future of Medi-Cal Commission members.

Senior Vice President for Business Excellence and Community Engagement, Justine Tamilo, provided an excellent overview of PACE, and highlighted CEI’s profoundly positive impact on the nearly 1,700 frail older adults they serve in Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

In this pivotal moment for Medi-Cal, we are honored that Commissioners are deepening their understanding of PACE as they create a 10-year vision and actionable roadmap for strengthening Medi-Cal. Caring for our rapidly growing older adult population must be front and center for the future of Medi-Cal

CalPACE Opposes Proposition 44: Protecting Access to PACE

CalPACE opposes Proposition 44 because of concerns about its potential impact on PACE organizations and access to PACE across California.

Proposition 44 would place new requirements on nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). Approximately one-third of the PACE organizations CalPACE represents are FQHCs, which play an important role in California’s PACE network by providing comprehensive, coordinated care that helps older adults remain in their communities.

CalPACE is concerned that the unintended consequences of Proposition 44 could affect the ability of FQHCs that operate PACE programs to sustain the full range of services they provide—including PACE. Any reduction in PACE capacity could ultimately affect access for the older adults and families who rely on this important model of care.

Protecting the organizations that provide PACE is essential to protecting access to PACE.

In honor of National PACE Month, CalPACE team members Karli and Rosie had the opportunity to accompany the California Commission on Aging on a visit to Habitat Health and see their work in action.

PACE Month is all about celebrating the people and organizations that make this model of care possible every day. We’re so thankful to the California Commission on Aging for taking time to come tour a PACE center and to the Habitat Health team for the care, connection, and commitment you bring to older adults and their communities.

Falls prevention is about more than preventing a fall. It’s about seeing the whole picture.

This , we’re celebrating the teams working every day to help older adults stay safe, supported, and independent in the communities they call home.

From mobility and medications to physical therapy, vision, nutrition, and the home environment, PACE interdisciplinary teams work together to understand each participant’s needs and coordinate care around the whole person.

Because when care is connected, potential risks don’t have to be addressed in isolation.

September is Healthy Aging Month and National PACE Month, and this year’s theme is a reminder that aging well is about more than health care. It’s about continuing to learn, build relationships, explore interests, participate in community, and do the things that bring meaning to our lives.

That’s an idea deeply connected to PACE. PACE brings care and support together around each participant so older adults can continue living in their communities with greater independence, connection, and opportunity to keep doing what matters to them.

This Healthy Aging Month, we’re celebrating older adults, and all the possibilities that come with every stage of life.
