🚂 In Temple, the railroad isn’t just part of the city’s history. It’s the reason the city appeared in the first place.

Temple began as a railroad town in 1881, growing around the Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe Railway as tracks pushed through Central Texas. Rail workers, businesses, travelers, and new residents followed, helping turn a railroad junction into a community.

Today, that story is preserved inside Temple’s historic Santa Fe Depot.

The Railroad and Heritage Museum explores the people who worked and traveled on the rails, along with the equipment, artifacts, and industries that grew around them. Outside, historic locomotives and railroad cars provide another connection to that era.

But perhaps the most interesting part is what surrounds the museum.

Trains still move through the active rail yard beside it, and passengers still arrive and depart by Amtrak.

In Temple, railroad history isn’t completely in the past. More than 140 years later, trains are still part of the life of the city they helped create.

A mammoth standing at the lip of a limestone sinkhole sounds like somewhere far away, but it describes Georgetown in the Ice Age, and the cave below the interstate holds the bones.

Inner Space Cavern once had two natural entrances, both sinkholes, and both have since filled in. Animals that wandered near them could fall in, and some could not get out. The fossils recovered from the cave include mammoth, saber-toothed cat, ground sloth, camel, horse and peccary.

The Texas State Historical Association describes a large variety of late Pleistocene vertebrate fossils from the cave.

Those entrances closed thousands of years ago and sealed the bones inside, which kept them safe until the highway crew drilled through. The cave worked as a time capsule with the lid welded shut.

So a morning commute through Georgetown passes over the place where Ice Age animals ended up. Almost no driver knows it, and almost nothing at the surface gives it away.

If you could pull one animal out of that cave and picture it above I-35, which would you choose?
