🎂 Yesterday was Cassie Townsend’s birthday! 🎂

And around here, that is absolutely worth celebrating!

Cassie is one of those people who seems to have collected a little bit of everything along the way. Performer, creator, storyteller, problem-solver, adventurer, cat mom, and self-proclaimed Jackette of all trades. Basically, if there’s something that needs doing, there’s a pretty good chance Cassie has either done it, knows someone who has, or is willing to figure it out. 😂

Cassie has been part of the RESCU community since 2018, starting out by helping with our Monday morning tables before joining the Board in 2022 as our Fundraising Co-Chair. Since then, she has brought her enormous heart, creativity, and love for this community to the work of making sure RESCU can keep showing up for the people who need us.

She has been part of the Renaissance festival community since 2002, and we’re pretty darn lucky that she chose to make RESCU part of her journey, too. ❤️

When she’s not helping RESCU, you might find Cassie and her partner somewhere on the road with their very important traveling companion, Kismet the cat. Because obviously every adventure needs a cat. 🐈

Happy belated birthday, Cassie! We hope yesterday brought you plenty of laughter, adventure, good people, and maybe a little bit of time to just enjoy being celebrated.

Not only does RESCU help you to negotiate medical bills down AND disburse financial aid for the bills that remain, but RESCU also connects festival workers with health and medical providers at low cost and no cost! Here’s a personal story from Deb Perusse, a weaver who has been on the circuit for decades:

"Having the NP there made it so that I could get back to my home state and get the total knee replacement that I needed. It's very difficult, when you're traveling, to get to see a doctor in another state... even though I have good insurance. That NP gave me follow up care and got me started, she stayed with me and helped me understand what I needed. I called my Florida based primary care provider and was able to schedule what the NP recommended so that when I finished the Louisiana show and went back to Florida I had my appointments and tests lined up." Deb tells her fellow Renaissance participants, "You don't have to go without medical care because you don't have insurance; with RESCU there are other options."

For years now, RESCU has been helping artists and artisans who fall through the cracks of our health and medical system. Here’s a personal story from Will Lubrano, a falconer who travels around the country:

"I travel with Renaissance Festivals and am often away from my P*P. Over the last several years, there have been a time or two when my blood pressure medications ran out and my P*P wouldn't refill until I made it back home, which was not going to happen for months! RESCU engages the services of a wonderful NP, and she was able to see me, check my vitals and renew my RX. Going just a few days without my blood pressure medicines could have had disastrous consequences, all because I travel and am self employed. Thank heavens for the help of RESCU Foundation! Thanks Guys!"

RESCU’s mission statement has three distinct components, one of which is education and preventative programs.

"Every year RESCU comes to Sherwood Forest Faire and has set up a Health Faire.
One of the great things is the dermatologist. She looked at one of my moles and said it should be removed. I went and had it removed and it was cancerous!
They also have a nutritionist who had a lot of good information.
Everyone that I have met with RESCU has always been extremely helpful. They showed me step by step on how to fill out the form to get medical assistance. What a blessing they are to all the people they serve. Thank you so much for being there." -Patina Herrington, long time participant at Sherwood Forest Faire outside of Austin, Texas.

A lifelong musician, storyteller, festival merchant, Certified Paralegal, advocate, and all-around creative force, Marney brings an incredible depth of experience, compassion, and dedication to everything she does.

Today, RESCU Foundation turns 23-years-old! Here’s what people have to say about our work thus far:

“As a full time participant at Renaissance festivals around the country, I am often away from my medical providers. In 2015 I was diagnosed with cancer, and underwent 4 surgeries and additional treatment that year. Some was covered by insurance, but the bulk of the cost, and the additional travel expenses, cost of medication, and additional treatments left me financially paralyzed. RESCU helped defray these costs, and continues to support me in my ongoing treatments. If it weren’t for RESCU, I wouldn’t have been able to make ends meet. Their support enabled me to focus on my healing, by taking some of the financial worry off my mind.” -Tracy

🥳 RESCU is about to celebrate 23 years of supporting the Renaissance community, and here’s what one community member had to say about the impact RESCU has had on their life:

“This group of caring, skilled, dedicated people have helped me and my family on numerous occasions. On so many levels. My mother and sister had a combined 30 years in this community, and when both were diagnosed with cancer, RESCU provided assistance. More than the monetary assistance, which was vital, I came to value even more over time the insights of our advocates. My sister was able to learn invaluable tools to advocate for herself, and when her cancer returned, RESCU was there again for both of us. Even now, years after both have passed, I find myself still very much supported by this community.”

Magnolia has been part of RESCU’s journey for nearly a decade, beginning as a volunteer in 2016 before serving in leadership roles including Programs Chair, Vice President, and now President of the Board.

As a full-time traveling entertainer, Magnolia understands firsthand the healthcare challenges faced by festival participants. Their lived experience and unwavering commitment to improving access to health and medical resources continue to guide RESCU’s mission and inspire compassionate solutions for our community.

As a fully volunteer board, we are grateful for Magnolia’s vision, leadership, and countless hours of service dedicated to helping others.
