LITTLE POLAND CELEBRATES MEL BROOKS

When Polish people sing “Sto lat,” it’s usually just a birthday wish. Mel Brooks took it seriously! 😂🎂

The legendary comedian celebrated his 100th birthday on June 28, 2026. We’d better start singing “Dwieście lat!”

Born Melvin Kaminsky in Brooklyn, Brooks has a family connection to present-day Poland. His father’s Jewish family came from what is now modern day Gdańsk. His story is part of the rich and complex Jewish heritage connected to the region.

As a writer, director, actor, producer, and songwriter, Brooks helped shape American comedy. His classics include The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, History of the World, Part I, and Spaceballs. He is also an EGOT winner, having earned Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards.

Poland recognized his achievements, too. In 2018, he received the Gold Medal for Merit to Culture—Gloria Artis, a prestigious honor awarded by Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

Before his entertainment career, Brooks served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He later used comedy to ridicule N***s and dictators, turning their demands for power and respect into objects of laughter.

His work also brought Polish characters and language to American audiences. In 1983’s To Be or Not to Be, Brooks and his wife, Anne Bancroft, played Polish theatrical performers caught up in the struggle against the N***s in occupied Warsaw—including a memorable performance of “Sweet Georgia Brown” in Polish.

We celebrate a remarkable entertainer whose work has brought laughter to generations.

Poland just made National Geographic's list of the 25 best places in the world to visit in 2027. 🇵🇱

Not one city. Three.

Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot, the Tricity on the Baltic coast.

National Geographic calls them "a trio of coastal cities on the rise."

Gdańsk grew rich as a Hanseatic port. The shipyard where Solidarity was born now has galleries, restaurants and music venues. Sopot is the classic seaside resort. Gdynia got its city rights only 100 years ago, and this year its modernist center joined the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The same list names Normandy, Puerto Rico and California's Pacific Coast Highway.

Not bad company for the Polish seaside.
