Here is a video of a muskrat filmed recently in the Dry Creek watershed 😍 A few facts about this underappreciated creature:

• Muskrats eat far more than cattails — their diet includes a variety of aquatic plants, crustaceans, frogs, and other small animals.
• A 2017 study found muskrat populations had declined by at least 50% in 34 U.S. states since the 1970s, with some areas experiencing collapses of 90–99%.
• Often overlooked, muskrats play a major role in maintaining healthy wetlands.

By feeding on cattails and other marsh vegetation, muskrats create pockets of open water and channels that increase habitat diversity for other species. These pathways also improve water circulation and help reduce stagnation. Their digging, plant cutting, and movement of sediment help recycle nutrients throughout the wetland.

Wetlands naturally tend to fill in and transition into drier habitat over time — muskrat activity helps keep marshes wetter and more ecologically diverse for longer.
