Measures for Justice

Measures for Justice We're leading a movement to change the future of criminal justice.

Since 2011, Measures for Justice (MFJ) has been on a mission to make good criminal justice data available and actionable to spur reform. We do this by collecting and releasing performance data from counties; working to standardize and improve criminal justice data policies; and delivering tools and services to ensure people can use the data to best effect.

Michigan is setting a strong example for what’s possible when courts lead with transparency.

In collaboration with the Michigan Supreme Court Administrative Office, we’ve launched public access to MI court data through our National Data Portal.

This kind of work informs, builds trust, and strengthens relationships between agencies and communities.

The criminal justice system is made up of more than 3,000 counties across the United States.
That also means there are more than 3,000 different ways data can be collected, defined, tracked, and reported.

From county to county:
-a case may be counted differently
-outcomes may be categorized differently
-key information may not be tracked at all

So when people try to understand what’s happening in their justice system, comparison becomes difficult, and sometimes impossible. Transparency isn’t just about having data. It’s about having data people can actually trust, understand, and compare.

From complex data to clear answers; for everyone.

Measures for Justice and Microsoft have partnered to launch our new Commons AI Navigator in Yolo County, California. Built directly in the Yolo County Commons dashboard, this tool makes criminal justice data more easily accessible to anyone — community members, advocates, practitioners, and local leaders — through simple, plain-language search. No technical expertise needed.

Yolo County has already proven what's possible when communities engage with data, growing diversion rates from 5.2% to over 21% in just four years. The AI Navigator is the next step toward ensuring everyone can be part of that progress.

Better access. Better understanding. Better outcomes.

There aren’t many spaces to openly discuss the complexities of the justice system across different roles.

The MFJ Collective is intentionally one of them.
It's a place for informed, respectful, and honest dialogue. A space to ask questions. A space to listen. A space to learn.

We measure almost everything in America. Schools. Hospitals. Public health outcomes.
But the criminal justice system- one of the most powerful systems in people’s lives- is often fragmented, inconsistent, and difficult to measure across jurisdictions.

In many places, basic questions are still hard to answer:
-How long do cases take?
-Who remains in jail pretrial?
-What outcomes differ across communities?
-What’s improving, and what isn’t?

Without reliable data, meaningful accountability becomes harder. Because you can’t fix what you can’t see.
