🎙🎙October 11th is National Coming Out Day. Sometimes this can be a very painful experience for people who don't define themselves as heteros*xual. Many have lost friends and family members that have shunned them because of their disclosure. This can lead to a life of survival s*x and/or a su***de attempt. As a society we need to be more understanding of a person's s*xual preference. If someone has the courage to disclose their s*xual preference to you, listen don't judge. Even if you feel uncomfortable, acknowledge the courage of the person speaking to you. You might be the person who keeps them from doing something very harmful to themself.

October was selected in part because National Coming Out Day is October 11. It is separate from LGBTQ Pride Month, which is observed in June. Throughout the month I will be posting on LGBTQ history. 🎙️September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. The annual observance, first launched in 1976 by the National Association for Sickle Cell Disease, Inc., aims to dispel myths, increase understanding of SCD, and encourage community action such as blood donation, advocacy, and public education. Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders in which red blood cells become hard, sticky, and shaped like a crescent or "sickle." These abnormal cells can block blood flow, causing pain episodes, anemia, infections, organ damage, and other serious complications. More than 90% of people living with SCD in the United States are Black or African American. Sickle cell disease affects approximately 100,000 Americans. About 1 in 365 Black or African American babies is born with sickle cell disease.
