Ant Hill Cooperative, Inc.

Ant Hill Cooperative, Inc. Why give landlords money to live lavish lifestyles? Instead, vote with your dollars and live at Ant Hill. What is intentional community?

We seek long-term residents who seek a place to build a life, contribute, and live with folks who share your sense of community. We seek long-term residents who seek not just a nice, inexpensive place to live, but also a place to build a life, contribute, and live with folks who share your sense of community. Usually once folks decide to establish their own homestead and figure how they'd like to

live, they begin searching listings for a given type of housing, which neighborhoods, and a price range. Apriori in those choices are the convenience of their daily commute, neighborhoods they've visited and like, and perceived crime. They consider how attractive and pleasant the place, it's construction, where they can park, amenities. If renting, they consider how pleasant the landlord might be. If buying, they consider taxes and school districts. Except when moving to live with friends and family, they consider nearly all else except their neighbors, whom they meet only after moving. In not choosing people, maybe the most important part, they get default community. Intentional community, instead, reverses the process to consider people first, like moving to live with friends or family. We consider their values, who they are as people, and see first if we like the members of the community and they like us. http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Intentional_community

The top story today at DemocratandChronicle.com features us and talks a little about intentional community!

Years have passed since journalists have come to visit and write about us, but Justin Murphy of the Democrat & Chronicle came to interview us two weeks ago. We talked about the history of Ant Hill, intentional community, and what residents hope from it.

We also mentioned Ecohouse. A thanks go to Joey Flowers, who referred Justin to us.

Collectives are aimed at urban renewal through sharing food and responsibilities.

Today at the Memorial Art Gallery, the creator of Kwanzaa visits from Long Beach to speak about its 4th principle, Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics). Of course, we in the cooperative community also know this principle in part as the http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Rochdale_principles.

The Gallery waives its regular admission, and as part of its Family Days, suggests a $5 donation per family. The event begins at noon, but Dr Maulana Karenga's talk begins at 2pm. So bring your family, or join ours, and celebrate Kwanzaa this afternoon at the Gallery.

Kwanzaa Family Day will be held at the Memorial Art Gallery on Sunday, December 29, from noon til 5 pm. This year we will be celebrating the 4th principle of the Nzugo Saba (the seven principles of Kwanzaa): Ujamaa.

Co-housing, cooperatives, and other forms of intentional community are hot, at least in the San Francisco Bay Area and the West Coast, perennial trendsetters with red hot housing markets where twenty- and thirtysomethings want to move.

Now Buffalo leads the nation in real estate appreciation in the latest numbers. http://j.mp/1fqnkgW Like Rochester, Buffalo escaped the housing bubble, but Rochester isn't far behind. Maybe the coop scene won't be either.

Antz don't flock, and Rochester isn't quite as trendy as San Francisco. Neither do we sleep in crawl spaces, but intentional communities mostly of 20-somethings feel similar despite the diversity across the country. The refrain “If you had a superpower, what would it be?” sounds familiar. Published just two hours ago, this New York Times article describes that feel, down to the dirty dishes. Is cooperative living for you? See http://Ant-Hill.org.

Ant Hill has an opening for January, and possibly more if we decide to re-establish House 972, one of the houses we started from the get-go and then swapped for House 964 in part to make way for Small World Food. Details to come later, so stay tuned. Let us know if you're interested!

Bay Area 20- and 30-somethings are flocking to “intentional communities,” tech-savvy, not particularly politicized versions of communes, where shared living became popular in the ’60s.

More Little Free Libraries have appeared in Rochester and still more are on the way. The libraries are part of a national effort to get books out of basements and garbage dumps and encourage reading. Locally the effort is due in large part to a local civic activism group called The Snowball Effect.…

Last year inaugurated a wonderful and useful conference about how to organize and found cooperatives of all sorts, businesses, credit unions, intentional communities. More than mere evangelizing, it presented ideas and recipes for what we could do with our lives. One result of that, more esteemed organizations and people have contributed to make it happen this year. If you have any inkling of interest, see http://lanyrd.com/2012/cnycoop/ for a few online presentations and then see a glimpse of this year's agenda below.

The New York Cooperative Network is thrilled to announce our Second Annual New York Cooperative Summit. This year's summit features expert speakers and presentations that will educate and inspire members of the cooperative movement – from experienced practitioners, to new enthusiasts. The Summit is…
