A message from our President, Dr. Selin 💛

For over 10 years, HMI has been a sanctuary where hear what they deserve to hear: this is not your fault, you matter, and you deserve dignity and opportunity. We don’t just support , we built a system that reminded people of their humanity.

Today we’re sharing hard news. Three of our largest programs have ended, we’re significantly reducing our operations, and we’re saying goodbye to most of our incredible team. To our staff: you are the heart of HMI. Every story, every family, every small victory happened because you showed up. To our donors, partners, and volunteers: thank you for believing in us and making the work possible.

But this is not the end of our mission. Dr. Selin’s motto has always been “if I can, I must,” and that’s exactly how we’ll move forward. We won’t stop doing this work, and we won’t stop caring. Compassion, kindness, and generosity are our superpowers, and they’ll keep this mission going.

Happy World Teachers’ Day! 🍎✏️

Today we’re celebrating the who show up for their learners every single day, with patience, creativity, and an unwavering belief in what their students can achieve.

HMI was built by educators. Our classes, which we’ve offered for over 10 years, are where it all began, and our volunteer and staff teachers remain at the heart of our work.

Our President, Selin, often reminds us that you can lose everything, but no one can take away your education. For many of the we serve, that’s a lived reality. Teachers are the ones who make that gift possible, helping learners build something that stays with them wherever life leads.

To the teachers in and around the world: thank you. Your dedication changes lives, and we see the impact of your work every day. 💛

Grateful to have joined the Inland Empire Regional Network Hub meeting hosted by TODEC Legal Center! 💙 It was great to come together with partners like California Department of Social Services, Covered California, Catholic Charities San Bernardino & Riverside Counties, Lifting Humanity and other organizations supporting immigrant communities in the IE!

With ICE enforcement and immigration legal challenges affecting so many families, collaboration matters more than ever. We’re all in this together, and we’re proud to be at the table making sure families we serve are represented and included in the conversation too.

Together, we are Strong! 🤝

Last Friday, we gathered at the Islamic Center of Riverside to celebrate the families of our Afghan Newcomer Support Program (ANSP). Today marks the final day of the program, which for nearly two years has been part of HMI’s ongoing work alongside Afghan newcomer families in Riverside County. 🎓

Every single ANSP family working with our team completed the three self-sufficiency goals they set for themselves, and many set new goals and reached those too. We also honored our women’s digital skills class and our driver’s permit students, at least four of whom have already earned their permits! 🚗💻

The night was filled with certificates, a potluck dinner cooked by our families, a kids’ room full of Legos and laughter, and helpful information on ongoing support from Rabia of Sahaba Initiative, who shared mental health and community resources, and Dr. Reshtin of IEHP, who walked families through the health resources available to them.

Thank you to Catholic Charities San Bernardino & Riverside Counties for providing 30 food boxes for families to take home, and to the Community Translational Research Institute (CTRI) for standing with us and helping make this work possible. 💚

To our ANSP families: the program may be ending today, but we’re so proud of you, and you’ll always be part of the HMI community.

9 months of community, connection, and impact. 💛

From supporting families and students, to community events, advocacy, and creating spaces where people feel seen and supported—these past nine months have been filled with moments that remind us why this work matters.

Every photo represents more than an event. It represents relationships built, stories shared, milestones celebrated, and communities coming together.

As we look back on everything we’ve accomplished so far this year, one thing remains constant: HMI is committed to continuing this work with care, purpose, and community at the center.

Thank you to every client, volunteer, partner, supporter, and community member who has been part of the journey. There is still more work to do—and we’re grateful to keep doing it together.

We asked our RSI students to show us.

What does peace make possible? 🕊️

For Asma, that question is personal.

In this moment from her graduation speech, she reflects on the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan—and the journey that led her to become the first woman in her family to graduate.

Her story is a reminder that peace is more than the absence of conflict. It can mean the freedom to learn, to dream, to build a future, and to become the person you were always capable of becoming.

This September, Asma is bringing her voice to our International Day of Peace celebration in Riverside.
