This week, we’re taking our community’s voices to Congress 📣

HMI is proud to join We Are All America for National Refugee Advocacy Days, August 17 through 21, advocating alongside communities across the country for refugees and immigrants.

Throughout the week, we’ll be connecting with members of Congress to bring attention to the realities facing refugee and immigrant communities and advocate for policies that protect access to safety, opportunity, and belonging.

But advocacy doesn’t only happen in meetings with elected officials.

Your voice matters too.

📲 Share this post to help bring greater awareness to refugee and immigrant issues.

🗣️ Talk about these issues within your own community.

🤝 Follow along this week and learn how you can join us in advocating for welcoming communities.

The more people who speak up, the harder our communities are to ignore.

Help us carry these voices further. Share this post and join us in advocating for a country where everyone has the opportunity to belong. 💙

Five years since fell and the promise made to allies still isn’t kept.

Swipe through to see where things stand: in , abroad, and here at home. 🌎➡️

Over the past five years, Afghan families here have rebuilt their lives — building careers, raising kids, giving back to their communities. But many are doing it without brothers, sisters, and parents still stuck abroad, and without the lasting stability they were promised.

These are the families in HMI’s Afghan Newcomer Support Program: proof of what’s possible, and a reminder of promises still unfinished.

👉 Take action: contact your representative and ask them to co-sponsor the Afghanistan Act of 2026 (H.R. 9899), which would restore protection for Afghans already here.

☀️ One camp. 30 kids. Ages 5 to 15. And a whole lot of summer fun!

This summer, HMI’s Refugee School Impact (RSI) Program brought students of all ages together for the second summer in a row for a week filled with learning, creativity, and connection. 💙

From getting up close with insects during a special visit from the California Department of Food and Agriculture to making slime, decorating plants, sharing meals, and getting ready for the new school year with fun learning games, there was always something happening.

One of our favorite parts? Seeing kids of all ages in one space come together each day of the week excited for a new adventure.

A huge thank you to our RSI staff and volunteers who made the week possible, Grace Radabaugh and the CDFA team for bringing learning to life. Big shoutout to Mamma Mia for providing meals for our students for the second year in a row. Lastly, all of this would not be possible without the generosity of Crest Community Church again 🫶🏽

Behind the Wheel & Moving Forward 🚗✨

Our Afghan Newcomer Support Program (ANSP) women recently visited IRC Los Angeles’s office to try out their new driving simulator, after weeks of in-house lessons on traffic rules and permit test prep.

Transportation is one of the biggest challenges families face in . Without a license, getting to work, picking up kids from school, or running errands can often mean coordinating rides around someone else’s schedule, waiting on infrequent bus routes, or walking long distances. This simulator let students practice real driving scenarios safely before getting behind the wheel. 🛞

Thank you to IRC Los Angeles for hosting our students and supporting this step towards independence and opportunity. 💛

Refugee professionals arrive with skills, credentials, and ambition, but rebuilding a career in a new country takes access and support.

Through Upwardly Global’s partnership with Human Migration Institute, clients are gaining certifications, career guidance, and pathways beyond survival jobs, restoring hope and creating opportunities for long-term career growth.

“We have so many great people in this program,” Allison Severns, Refugee Career Pathways Project Manager, says. “They deserve to have access to this, to grow their career, to have people on their side.”

HMI was proud to attend All Together: IECF’s Policy and Philanthropy Summit 2026 last week! ⭐️

This year’s summit focused on building in our community, a theme that feels especially timely as service providers navigate the effects of H.R. 1. With 300,000 people in the IE alone set to lose Medi-Cal starting January 1st, conversations around trusted messengers, coalition-building, and filling gaps together were much needed.

👉 Carolyn from The California Endowment said it best: “Belonging is a precondition to health.”

Even when systems fail, people are still here, including the many families HMI serves, still relying on us to help them build a life in the U.S. Proud to be part of a that shows up for them, no matter what. 🤝✨

Culture 💙 has a way of bringing us together

HMI was honored to collaborate with Veera Event Agency , Angels of Ukraine | Charity 🇺🇦🇺🇸 and Veera&Teplo EventsAndCommunity for this year’s Ivana Kupala celebration—a cherished Ukrainian midsummer tradition that celebrates renewal, nature, and community.

From wreath making and music to meaningful conversations and shared traditions, the event created a beautiful space for people of all backgrounds to connect, learn, and celebrate Ukrainian culture together.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible partners, Kobzar Choir for sharing their talent, and everyone who joined us in making this celebration so memorable. We are grateful for opportunities like these that continue cultural traditions while building stronger, more connected communities.

💛Together, we celebrate heritage, foster belonging, and create connections that last.

What family saying did you 🫵🏽 grow up hearing?

In Part 7 of our International Idioms series, Karina from our partner, Community Settlement Association Community Settlement Association, shares a family idiom that has been passed down through generations.

Idioms are more than expressions—they carry stories, values, and traditions that connect us across cultures. Through partnerships like ours with Community Settlement Association, we’re proud to celebrate language as a bridge to learning, belonging, and community.

💬 We’d love to hear from you! What’s a saying your family always used? Share it in the comments.
