Anyone out there recall the Mother Emanuel AME Church massacre in Charleston, S.C.? The Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville, which ended in the deaths of three people and injuries of dozens? The calls for Confederate statues to come down in the wake of George Floyd's murder during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic? Questions (and fierce 'debates') about what to do with the Confederate statues and Civil War artifacts once they were removed? I knew about all of this of course, but only recently had the chance to write about what happened to a couple of statues in Charlottesville that made their way Los Angeles, and (at least one) will return to Charlottesville in the form of bronze ingots and jars of slag (dirt). Here are the articles that I wrote when I visited two Los Angeles museums last December to further unravel the Lost Cause and its continuing costs. https://www.cvilletomorrow.org/charlottesvilles-confederate-statues-are-centerstage-in-west-coast-art-exhibition-rooted-in-tragedy-and-trauma/?fbclid=IwY2xjawRll7NleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEe-tv4mQyFasYmAJp2GNoh4BcwJf0WR-HslFFYvYC7QJrZBR_j3ScxhC5cvhw_aem_olSKH07hiod7ZZdrmKFWNQ

Now part of the "Monuments" exhibition on the West Coast, the remnants of Charlottesville's Robert E. Lee statue will come back east to be transformed into new public art.
