VYCC hires young people for summer (and spring/fall) outdoor jobs. VYCC is a nonprofit organization. We’ve been bringing young people together, and into the outdoors, since 1985.

A huge thank you to all of our 2026 Members and Leaders for an incredible season of service! Together, they constructed miles of trails, grew more than 80,000 pounds of food, removed tens of thousands of water chestnut rosettes from Lake Champlain, packed and delivered more than 5,700 Health Care Shares, and so much more.

We are incredibly grateful for the hard work, dedication, and energy these inspiring young people brought to their crews and the communities they served throughout the season. Their contributions have made a lasting impact across Vermont, and we feel lucky to have been part of their journey. Thank you for an amazing season!

It’s hard to believe today is the last day of service for our Food & Farm Leaders! We’re feeling so grateful for all the heart, hard work, and care they’ve poured into the farm and our community this season.

From snowy spring days preparing beds and planting seeds, to long, hot summer days weeding, to crisp fall mornings packing Health Care Shares, this team showed up with dedication, positivity, and a commitment to working together. Through every season and every challenge, they demonstrated just how much a team can accomplish when they work toward a shared goal.

While we’re sad to see them go, we’re so proud of all they’ve accomplished and excited to see the impact they’ll continue to make in their communities.

Join us in celebrating our Food & Farm Leaders and thanking them for a season of meaningful service that supported Corps Members and communities across Vermont!

Exciting things are taking shape on the VYCC campus, thanks to our incredible Timber Framing Crew! All season long, the crew has been hard at work building and raising the timber frames for three-season cabins and a new outdoor kitchen.

Finding affordable housing during service terms can be a significant challenge for Corps Members, sometimes preventing young people from joining VYCC altogether. By helping create on-campus housing, our 2026 Timber Framing Crew is helping remove that barrier and make service more accessible for future Corps Members.

Along the way, crew members are gaining hands-on experience in traditional timber framing, building valuable skills while creating something that will benefit the VYCC community for years to come.

A huge thank you to our 2026 Timber Framing Crew for your hard work, craftsmanship, and dedication. We can’t wait to see these spaces come to life!

The Advanced Trails Crew is currently working in Bennington on a project in partnership with the Green Mountain Club, Appalachian Trail Conservancy, National Park Service, and Public Land Corps. Since September 7th, the crew has been tackling a long-term project to complete a reroute of the Appalachian and Long Trails that began several years ago. The reroute spans approximately one-third of a mile and features a series of switchbacks designed to improve trail conditions and sustainability.

The work includes cutting new trail, brushing in sections of the old trail to support natural recovery, building check dams to address excessive erosion, and constructing stone staircases. This hands-on work helps create a more sustainable trail while protecting the surrounding landscape for future hikers.

The project also offers the crew a valuable backcountry experience. While camping in the field, crew members must collect and properly treat water from a nearby stream and securely store all smellable items to avoid attracting bears. These responsibilities are an important part of working safely and responsibly in remote outdoor environments.

Training is an essential part of VYCC’s Conservation Program, giving our Leaders and Members the knowledge and hands-on skills they need to complete their projects effectively, efficiently, and safely.

Training looks different every day, from classroom sessions and time in the workshop to getting outside and putting new skills into practice. Leaders receive training in wilderness first aid, tool use and maintenance, and common conservation techniques, building the foundation they need for a successful service term.

And what better place to practice than right here on VYCC’s campus? With miles of trails to work on, our Leaders can take what they’ve learned and put their skills to the test through hands-on trail work before heading out to projects across Vermont.

Crews are out across the state right now using the skills they learned during training. A huge thank you to the VYCC staff who provide this essential training and to the Members and Leaders who show up ready to learn, challenge themselves, and build new skills!

Join Us This Friday for a Presentation with Ethan Tapper!

Ethan Tapper will be joining us on the VYCC campus at 1949 East Main Street, Richmond, VT 05477, this Friday, October 2nd from 3:30–4:30pm.

During his presentation, Ethan will share insights from his career in conservation, explore his environmental philosophy, and discuss his forthcoming book, The Forest Year: Finding Hope in a World Worth Saving.

Ethan Tapper is a forester, ecologist, bestselling author, and digital storyteller from Vermont. He served as the Chittenden County Forester from 2016–2024, and during his tenure was named Forester of the Year in recognition of his outstanding work as a consultant and environmental educator.

Join us in the VYCC West Monitor Barn Haymow this Friday at 3:30pm to hear from Ethan! This is a free event, and everyone is welcome.

Did you know VYCC has chickens on the Farm?

Our chickens are an important part of the learning experience for young people serving with VYCC. During their term of service, Members gain hands-on experience with livestock care and the daily responsibilities that come with raising animals.

Also, our chickens help us provide fresh eggs to our community and Health Care Share recipients. Community members can pick up a dozen eggs at the VYCC Farmstand, while Health Care Share recipients receive fresh eggs in their share at least once during the season.

From hands-on learning to fresh food on the table, our chickens are helping VYCC grow a healthier community!

Conservation Crew 8 is hard at work at Ricker Pond State Park, helping create a brand new lean-to where future visitors can slow down, enjoy the pond, and experience the beauty of Vermont’s outdoors.

There’s a lot that goes into building a lean-to. The crew is priming the wood that will become part of the structure while also completing important site work to prevent erosion and create level, durable ground for future campers.

We’re grateful of the work Cons Crew 8 is putting in to care for state parks across Vermont!
