What does “cheese with dignity” taste like? According to folks who’ve tried it: delicious!

We’re excited to share about this new organic cheese hitting shelves around the state as a result of a partnership between Migrant Justice, Vermont Way Foods, organic dairy farmers, cheesemakers, and community organizations, all working to create the first-ever cheese enrolled in the Milk With Dignity program.

NOFA-VT is proud to support this effort by convening the project team, bringing knowledge of Vermont's organic agricultural system to the table, and helping cover research and development and marketing costs through a USDA Organic Market Development Grant. The cheese itself is made with organic, 100% grass-fed milk from Severy Farm in Cornwall and crafted by Champlain Valley Creamery.

See the link below to read the full story, and be on the lookout for this new cheese at a grocery store, co-op, or food hub near you!

Our cups—and spoons—are full after spending Saturday at Knoll Farm carving long-handled spoons together!

Deep gratitude to Peter Forbes for generously sharing his time, skill, stories, and spirit with NOFA-VT members. Peter reminded us that spoon carving isn’t just about making an object with your hands, it’s about making community. As he says, “A group can take on almost any project after it has learned to make spoons together.”

Over the past year, the Parable of the Long-Handled Spoons has become an important touchstone in our community, serving as a potent reminder that we keep each other fed, safe, and warm through mutual care and connection.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and especially to Peter and the whole Knoll Farm community for welcoming us so warmly. We can’t wait to see these long-handled spoons show up at future NOFA-VT gatherings. ❤️🥄

Special thanks to Helena Duecker for many of these photos!

It’s not people OR the land. It’s people AND the land. It’s not housing OR wildlife, food OR clean water. Our vision has always been both: land and people, thriving and fed, hand in hand. The policies we collectively long for center care and reciprocity between people and the planet.

As conversations around Act 181 continue across Vermont, our members have been gathering around kitchen tables and in barns to ask bigger questions about what kind of future we actually want to build together.

A future where people can make a good living caring for the land. Where communities are fed and housed. Where policies are rooted in reciprocity, care, and collective wellbeing.

Our latest blog reflects on why the current debate around land use policy and the profound need for land use policymaking to bring farmers, aspiring farmers, farmworkers, loggers, sugar makers, and all who work the land, or wish they could work the land, to the table.

Because of this community, we’re not just responding to challenges—we’re building something stronger in their place.

Together, we’re:

🥕Bringing neighbors together for shared, locally grown meals

🥕Exploring new models for land access in a changing landscape

This work is about showing up, filling gaps, and making sure no one falls through the cracks—together!

Turns out Vermont’s “greenest state” title isn't just about clean energy and electric vehicles—it’s rooted in the way we care for the land!

A new analysis from WalletHub names Vermont the greenest state, and points to Vermont’s abundance of organic farms as a key reason for its top ranking, underscoring the vital role farmers play in protecting soil, water, and climate through organic practices.

For us, that’s the real story: organic agriculture isn’t just good for the food we grow—it’s essential to the health of our broader communities and ecosystems.

Join NOFA-VT and regional partners June 23-24 for a Northeast agroforestry gathering focused on relationship-building, shared learning, and advancing a regional agroforestry network.

Held at innovative farms in western Massachusetts, including Yellowbud Farm, Meadowfed Lamb, and Carr's Cider House, this event brings together experienced farmers and practitioners for farm tours, collaborative working sessions, and conversations about strengthening markets and increasing capacity for agroforestry systems.

Through hands-on learning and connection, participants will explore how tree crops can support resilient farms, healthy ecosystems, and a more vibrant regional food system.

Attendees are welcome to join us on Tuesday, Wednesday, or both! Learn more and reserve your spot at the link below:

Running a successful farm takes a wide range of skills—from production and marketing to financial and labor management.

NOFA-VT staff are part of a network of experts in the state that offer business planning and related services with funding and support from the Vermont Farm & Forest Viability Program (an initiative of the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board).

We work with farmers at all stages of development to create plans and build skills needed to reach business and quality-of-life goals.

Services are tailored to each farm and can include business planning, succession and transfer planning, cash flow analysis, enterprise evaluation, land access support, and beyond.
