Did you know UPAL’s Community Training Center offers certified in-person and online courses? Whether you are fulfilling requirements or learning lifesaving skills, we have you covered:
🚗 8-Hour Driver Improvement ($80) | Certified by the Virginia DMV with NTSI to award up to 5 safe driving points. Offered Mon, Wed & Sat (9 AM – 5 PM). Call 804.308.1518 to register.
🚚 Es**rt Vehicle Training & Certification ($200) | State-certified safety training for oversized load and pilot vehicle operators.
⛑️ CPR / AED & Basic First Aid ($50) | Conforms to AHA & ARC guidelines. Ideal for parents, caregivers, and workplace emergency response teams.

Community! We've got nothing but love for you all this Kwanzaa season as we celebrate in style at the Hub. We hope you'll join us to kick off Kwanzaa season at the Umoja Kwanzaa Celebration on December 26. We have so much in store including our very special guest, renowned actor and advocate, Tico Wells, known for the classic film, The Five Heartbeats. In addition to Tico's talk and meet greet, there will be drumming, a market place (so you can purchase all your Kwanzaa gifts!), a Watoto (Children's) Corner with arts& craft, and so much more!

2025 is shaping up to be an incredibly busy and productive year for the team! We’re excited to share our latest updates on our collective efforts to tackle environmental hazards in our communities. 💙

As we wrap up our annual April is Lead Awareness Month campaign, the UPAL family and our community members gathered to celebrate at the historic Byrne Street USO for Colored Army Troops, now home to the Petersburg Community Resiliency Hub.

In 2022, Mayor Parham officially declared April 30th as Community Resiliency Day. This year, during our celebration, UPAL unveiled its Landmark and Historic marker.

Notable speakers included Franklin Roosevelt Williams, a retired military member and current community advisory board member, as well as Pamela Bignham, another advisory board member, who shared her heartfelt insights on the significance of community resiliency. The event also featured a beautiful performance by UPAL EJ Youth Force member Joshua Clark, who uplifted everyone with his rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing!"

On May 3rd, we also hosted our annual World Labyrinth Day gathering at the UPAL Garden Labyrinth in Richmond, VA.

Participants began the labyrinth walk, with each step symbolizing a personal commitment to peace. Some walked in silence, while others took the time to connect with fellow participants, sharing stories and thoughts about what peace meant to them. The labyrinth served as a powerful metaphor for the journey of life, illustrating both the twists and turns we encounter and the eventual path toward clarity and resolution.

Today, we celebrate a powerful theme: Our Planet, Our Power. As parents and caregivers, we have a unique role in protecting our environment and ensuring a healthier future for our children. Together, we can make a difference!
