We are pleased to share news of another life-changing vehicle gift, thanks to the support of our kind donors.

S. is a refugee resettled with her husband and three children in Pennsylvania. She is a talented pastry chef, and the vehicle she got with the help of Rides for Refugees will enable her to take a full-time job at a bakery and also start a catering business on the side. She already has orders coming in!

In her native Afghanistan, S. taught girls in primary and middle school--until the Taliban assumed control and prevented girls from attending school. Her husband, R., a humanitarian program officer, trained police in human rights and assisted women escaping domestic violence.

The couple's jobs and ethnicity made them a target of the Taliban. They made a harrowing escape from Afghanistan--but not before R's brother was captured and killed by the Taliban while trying to protect the family's property and finances. The family lived in refugee camps in three countries before being admitted to the United States.

Now, with the help of Rides for Refugees, S. and R. are able to envision a brighter future for their family after so much loss and trauma.

A Green Card is no guarantee of financial stability for refugees in the United States. Because of a widespread lack of transportation, even legal-permanent-resident refugees with ample work qualifications may have trouble finding jobs and getting to work.

That's where Rides for Refugees comes in: We get low-income, legal-permanent-resident refugees the vehicles they need to get to work and become self-reliant. This helps refugee families and strengthens U.S. communities. And we're the only nonprofit addressing the transportation gap for refugees nation-wide.

Many thanks to our partners at Welcoming Falls Church, whose kind donation has helped pay for taxi fare to and from work, for a newly arrived Afghan S.I.V. refugee resettled in Falls Church, Virginia.

The refugee, whom we'll call "F.E.," is a young woman working as a patient advocate in an emergency room. The taxi rides have made it possible for her to travel safely to and from her overnight shift, when public transportation is unavailable.

As compassionate as she is gracious, F.E. is grateful for the opportunity to help and comfort others in their most trying moments. She is optimistic about her future and is very thankful for the support of the people of the United States, Welcoming Falls Church, and Rides for Refugees.

"You have changed my life, believe me," she told us.
