Our afterschool program recently had a fun excursion to get up close and personal with science and nature at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Kids in our program were eager to learn and joyfully explored all the intriguing exhibits. Activities like this help children in our program build confidence as they explore their interests and creates fun experiences as their family works towards stable housing.

We'd like to give a huge thank you to First Citizens Bank employees who came out to our donations pantry last week to make a positive difference for local families. They worked together to create welcome baskets, organize donations, and take inventory so that new families entering our program can be greeted with the essential items they need to get started on their journey to stability. A clean and neat pantry also means Mentor Advocates can quickly grab whatever families may be needing, spending more time partnering with families to build long-lasting security and less time searching through the pantry for items. At the end of all their hard work, our First Citizens Bank volunteers also got to play a round of our Stack The Odds game!

Ms. P found herself and her 3 children couch surfing for months after escaping domestic violence. Being safe meant entering a period of instability for her family. But with support from Families Together's individualized guidance, she was able to work on employment and receive the proper healthcare for herself and her children, critically receiving help to address recent trauma and improve their emotional well-being. After working on her stability plan with our team, she was able to move out of homelessness and now works two jobs that allowed her to sign a lease in her own name. Now, her children are safe, in a stable home, and are free to be just kids again, taking full advantage of the playground in their living community.

Ms. P's story is just one of many families who find themselves experiencing housing instability from one day to the next.
