Southeastern Wind Coalition

Southeastern Wind Coalition The Southeastern Wind Coalition works to advance the land-based and offshore wind industry in the Southeast.

SEWC is a 501(c)(3) that works to advance the land-based and offshore wind industry in ways that result in net economic benefits to industry, utilities, and residents in the Southeast. We focus on supply chain growth, economic development, job growth, and wind energy development in the region with solutions that are beneficial to industry, beneficial to utilities, and result in net economic benefi

ts to citizens and ratepayers. The Coalition takes an objective, transparent, data-driven, and economically focused approach to advance the industry and inform policy discussions while working closely with utilities via a Utility Advisory Group (UAG) to find mutually beneficial solutions.

🏡💲A Win-Win(d): In North Carolina, Apex Clean Energy's Timbermill Wind Farm is helping to offset nearly half of the proposed spending increase in the county's new budget.

Thanks to higher property values and about $700,000 annually in property tax payments from the wind farm, local leaders can cover much of the increased budget without relying as heavily on taxpayers.

Madelyn Smith, SEWC’s Program Manager for Louisiana, recently returned from WindEurope 2026 in Madrid with a clear takeaway: the global wind industry is moving quickly, and the U.S. has an opportunity to be part of it.

For the first time ever, renewables generated more electricity than coal in 2025. In Europe, wind energy is not only about climate goals, it is also central to energy security, supported by strong coordination between government and industry.

Many of the challenges discussed felt familiar, including permitting, transmission, and community concerns. What stood out was the level of alignment and collaboration around solving the big issues.

SEWC President Katharine Kollins joined Living on Earth to discuss the real impacts of TotalEnergies' $1B lease settlement.

"It’s a dual blow to the taxpayer…paying back nearly $1B and facing higher long-term costs from a less diverse energy mix."

From immediate costs to long-term energy reliability, she explains what’s at stake for offshore wind and the U.S. energy future.

HB 677 is now law in Kentucky, creating new statewide restrictions on wind energy development.

The legislation sets new statewide limits on turbine height and siting, while preserving the ability of counties to set their own requirements.

What does this mean for investment, jobs, and the future of energy in the state? Learn more about it here: https://www.sewind.org/news/hb-677-kentucky-wind-energy-restrictions

A new $20M Gulf Coast initiative is exploring how retired offshore oil & gas platforms can be repurposed for green hydrogen, aquaculture, and more.

For the Southeast, this highlights a major opportunity: using existing offshore infrastructure alongside growing renewable resources, especially wind energy, to create new economic uses and extend the life of these assets.

This approach supports job creation, innovation, and long-term value for coastal communities.

Yesterday was Renewable Power Day at the Louisiana Capitol! ⚡

Karla Frias-Romaine, SEWC’s Senior Program Associate for Louisiana, joined industry leaders and policymakers for a day of connection and learning. Special thanks to the Advanced Power Alliance, SREA, Claitor Chabert, and Jordan Gleason with Cornerstone Government Affairs for organizing a fantastic event.

Throughout the day, she met with elected officials and state leaders and attended presentations from the Kathleen Blanco Public Policy Center, Pelican Institute Center for Energy, and the Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Energy Center.

The event provided valuable insights and opportunities to connect with developers working to bring new projects, jobs, and greater diversity to Louisiana’s energy mix.

At last week's Powering Louisiana Forum, the Southeastern Wind Coalition and GNO Inc. convened leaders from across energy, industry, and policy to engage in candid, cross-sector dialogue on Louisiana’s energy future.

A clear theme emerged: an all-of-the-above energy strategy is essential to maintaining the state’s economic competitiveness, strengthening grid reliability, and supporting continued growth. Within that mix, wind energy remains a viable and important opportunity.

Additionally, meaningful progress will require broadening the conversation, building new partnerships, and engaging stakeholders across sectors.
