STOP SCROLLING! 🛑 WE HAVE A NEW FUNDRAISER! 🥳

A supporter was kind enough to donate a whole set of ceramic bakeware to help us raise money to pay off our vet debt. Right now, we're sitting at $3k we have to pay off, and we were able to get that low thanks to your support at the Rockaway Dog Parade 🙏🏻 but we're not out of the hole yet, and we have upcoming vet appointments we have to make still for our rescue dogs and Project Nya recipients, let alone paying for every day supplies and Zippy's boarding with our friends at Sarama Animal Rescue (who you all should support too!)

Tickets will be available for purchase until October 29, 11:55 pm and the lucky winner will be called on October 30th on our social media!

Thank you to Rockaway Times for the amazing coverage of the Rockaway Dog Parade! ❤️🎉

The money raised is helping pay off our vet bill debt. We still have a few thousand more to go before our debt is cleared, so stay tuned for a new raffle fundraiser 🐾

Last Saturday, October 3, hundreds crowded the boardwalk and its steps and Beach 94th Street Amphitheater’s plaza was filled with pups and people all ready to enjoy the fun, furry and fabulous 5th Annual Rockaway Dog Parade.

As an animal rescue, it is always horrifying to read these stories of a rescue or shelter being investigated and charged with animal cruelty. 30 dogs were depending on this rescue and their leader to not just save them, but to care for them. Instead they were kept in deplorable conditions, not fed, not given medical when needed and had to be seized.

Sometimes, people join rescue because they want to make a difference but don't know their limits. To be an ethical rescue, you have to know what resources you have, be very mindful of your budget, what support you receive and also your own mental, emotional and physical capacities. You may want to save them all but it's not feasible to run an organization that way. "Just one more" can easily become 5, then 10 and if they have behavioral or medical needs, they can sit longer in your rescue because they are more difficult to place, which then eats up a lot of your budget for ongoing care.

The initial rescue is only step one but it's the only one most people think about. We need to do better when thinking about animal welfare and consider the well being of the animals that need long term care prior to adoption. But also, we need to do our due diligence when transferring dogs, especially from out of state, from municipal shelters. I was sad to see a New York shelter shipping dozens of dogs out to this rescue in the last few years. Just because you're taking them out of a munipal shelter doesn't always guarantee they will be in a better situation, but that's what happens when people look at animal welfare as data and numbers and not actual welfare with sentient beings.

October is Pitbull awareness month and to this day, pitbulls are one of, if not the most, misunderstood breeds. We love our block headed friends and they are the kindness, sweetest and loyalest dogs you can ever adopt.

They were symbols of courage and loyalty in the early 20th century and were once considered America's family dog. Did you know that many notable Americans, including Thomas Edison, Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, Fred Astaire, and Humphrey Bogart, proudly owned pitbulls?

Yet the same traits that make them amazing family companions are the same traits some humans like to exploit to force them into dog fighting, creating the harmful stigma that pitbulls are dangerous dogs. Because of this, they are often bred for the wrong reasons, abandoned and the highest type of dog to be euthanized in shelters around the world.

We are asking you to help fight this stigma! You can:

🐾 Foster or adopt a pitbull from your local shelter or rescue (like us 😊)
🐾 Consider donating to a rescue who takes in pitbulls (because not all rescues do)
🐾 Have a pittie of your own? Share their story below! We'd love to see them ❤️

The Rockaway Dog Parade yesterday was such a memorable experience, we're still in awe on how many people came out to support such a fun family friendly event in Rockaway. There were so many cute dogs and their costumes, there are only a few of them!

Ameer of course had a blast in his Gary the Snail costume until he said it was time to go bc he wanted to nap in peace after tap dancing up and down the beach, boardwalk and amphitheatre.

Thank you to all the vendors who showed up and donated some of their proceeds to our mission. Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket to the parade. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table to learn about our mission, took a flyer (or two!) and asked about our adoptable dogs.

We've been rescuing in Rockaway for years and while we have seen the worst, it was awe inspiring to see dog parents unite for something so positive. There is no "I" in rescue. We all play a part in rewriting their futures. From boots on the ground rescuing like we do, to fostering, adopting, volunteering, donating, participating in events and even just spreading the word by sharing our social media posts, we can all make a difference.

Our hearts are full ❤️ and it's because of you Rockaway ❤️🌊

🎊TODAY AT THE ROCKAWAY DOG PARADE
We (Zion’s Mission and Sasha's Mission) were reunited with one of our more challenging trappings. Today, Lady is living her best life with her forever family who worked tirelessly to gain her trust and help her blossom into the confident, relaxed, and well adjusted dog she is today.

We worked relentlessly to safely trap Bambi, now known as Lady, after she spent far too long surviving on her own in East New York. We knew from the moment we saw her that she deserved a chance to start over, and like we always say, we never leave with an empty trap.

With our whole hearts we thank the Rockaway Dog Parade for featuring us as their rescue this year. We had such a fantastic time and so did the dogs. Thank you all ❤️

So why do I get to Casa Zion after work and Daisy is giving me this look??? Like??

She heard the word on the street is Ameer is going to the on Saturday and she feels like chop liver over here. And during Pitbull awareness month?? Et tu Brute...

I had to sit down and remind her that she can't go because she's a diva who doesn't mess with other dogs. She has ✨OPINIONS✨ and prefers to be the only furry queen in her castle. (Tbh, mood) So her human representatives will be there to advocate on her behalf.

She borfed that I was right and that Ameer can tap dance for the humans to get adopted, she'll be on the couch waiting for her representatives to come back with foster or adoption paperwork for her to paw through.

I gave her a milkbone and the meeting was adjourned. I was then dismissed to do my human duties.

WHAT? ONLY 4 DAYS UNTIL THE ROCKAWAY DOG PARADE?!

Ameer can barely contain himself. And yes, before anyone asks, Ameer will be there to take his adoption applications in person because he's tired of waiting and wants to take matters into his own paws. His human representatives will also be there because this boy thinks we're his personal assistants and lawyers (we are, check our degrees)

But before you start your Hondas and scream "WE'RE ON OUR WAY", we're letting you know now, Ameer will NOT be leaving the parade with you, no matter how good your application looks on paper because we do home checks! This is not a car dealership deal. You do not pull up, sign some paperwork, shake hands and drive away with the merchandise. 😂 Ameer will be coming back with us to borf his opinions at us and call your references while snacking on some treats.

Ameer is good with kids, other dogs (but they need to be chill because he doesn't mess with the chaos). Honestly, he could probably teach your kids how to tap dance because he's a tap dancing fool for treats when we get home from work. He will borf at the Amazon delivery person though because how dare they step to his property without HIS knowledge and permission. He says it's rude.

He doesn't need much. He likes long walks and to sniff some grass and flowers because he's a gentle soul. He loves a couch nap like 3x a day and he absolutely needs his emotional support blanket. Also, did we mention his adoption fee is WAIVED?!

On her way to work today, Maribel saw a dog tied up to a pole near a daycare. Please, people please, stop leaving your dog tied outside while you run to do errands or drop off. You never know what could happen while you're inside.
