Direct Action for Rights and Equality (DARE), the Stop Torture RI Coalition, and impacted family members are mourning the loss of Ross Amos, 34, who died on May 30, 2026, while incarcerated at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) in Cranston. In response to the death, we held a vigil, with mock caskets representing lives lost to ACI neglect, outside the Rhode Island State House yesterday.

“Our loved ones are not sent to prison to die," said Melanie Perez, an organizer with Behind the Walls. "They are human beings, worthy of dignity, care, and coming home alive.”

We are excited to announce our new Policy and Operations Coordinator, Flo Hunter!

Flo is a current MPA student at Brown University graduating this May with a concentration in Public Leadership and Management.

She brings experience from Washington, DC, where she interned at a federal lobbying firm and worked full-time at a public affairs firm.

In Rhode Island, Flo interned at the State House with Governor Daniel McKee’s policy team and has been providing legislative and advocacy support to the Village Common of Rhode Island through Brown’s Policy in Action program.

We are excited to have Flo on the team working under the leadership of Brandon Robinson.

If you want to volunteer and support us at an upcoming event, email [email protected] to get involved!

The Clean Slate Rhode Island team was honored to join Dr. Wendy Becker’s Groups and Community Practice class at Rhode Island College, where we had the opportunity to engage with students and discuss several key pieces of legislation currently before the Rhode Island House and Senate Judiciary Committees.
From the Clean Slate Initiative to Bail on 32, Body Cameras for RI Correctional Staff, and the Restrictive Confinement Oversight Act, our work is centered on advancing policies that create safer, more just systems. These efforts aim to improve the quality of life for incarcerated individuals, support successful reentry for those returning to our communities, and ensure that individuals who have earned a second chance through expungement can move forward without the weight of their past holding them back.

We are grateful for the space to educate, connect, and inspire the next generation of leaders committed to justice and equity.

Join and .pvd this Saturday, May 16th, at the Southside Cultural Center, at 2:00 pm, for The Power of Second Chances. The event brings together a distinguished group of interfaith leaders in a discussion to be moderated by Alisha Pina, of the Rhode Island Interfaith Coalition to Reduce Poverty to Reduce Poverty, that will explore what various religious traditions have to say about the redemptive quality of second chances and what that has to teach us about the expungement process and the value of allowing people to move forward without being defined forever by their past.
Seating is limited. Refreshments served. Use the QR code below to register.
