Are you ready to pay $18.29/m more for electricity? 47 state legislators just said that you should, because of "affordability."

On Friday, Assemblymembers and State Senators filed a letter in the most important state Public Service Commission proceeding that few ratepayers have ever heard of: Case 24-E-0165, or the “Grid of the Future” docket that opened in April 2024.

The letter asks regulators to “require utilities to put electric heating rates in place by the end of 2027," in support of a petition filed originally by the Environmental Defense Fund, Alliance for a Green Economy, Building Decarbonization Coalition, Earthjustice, New Yorkers for Clean Power, Rewiring America and Sierra Club.

What do "fair rates" for electric heating customers translate to? We did the math, using the methodology offered by the petitioners.

It means that customers across the state who don't have electric heat will pay an average of $9.64 extra a month to subsidize electric heat. NYSEG customers would pay an extra $14.50 a month, and Central Hudson customers, who already pay some of the fastest-rising rates in the country, would pay an extra $18.29/m.

It would affect seven of eight ratepayers in the state, to subsidize one in eight.

Local 320 held our first Retiree Picnic today at Rifton, and it was a wonderful day celebrating the members who helped build our union. It was great to see everyone reconnect, share stories from the past and present, and enjoy time together. A special thank you to the members who volunteered their time and effort to make this event such a tremendous success. We appreciate all that you do!

President/Business Manager Steve Carroll addresses the City of Poughkeepsie Council regarding IBEW Local 320’s concerns with HVPA. If the elected officials pushing for the Hudson Valley Power Authority are unwilling to engage with our union today, there is little trust they will listen to us if a takeover were to occur. Bill sponsors & elected officials are minimizing our concerns and speaking on our behalf, but they have not actually spoken to us. Educate yourself before jumping onboard something that would put all our communities at risk.

Political slogans will not create a better utility.

We packed the room at the City of Poughkeepsie Council Meeting 7/14 to show our opposition to HVPA. We are the men & women who work in the field and in the office to make sure the electric stays on. We are the ones who put the power back on for you after a storm. We will not stand for council members grandstanding a storm that destroyed our neighbors’ properties just to push their agenda. We will not back down from the fight against HVPA.

Vice President Patrick Whalen spoke at the City of Poughkeepsie Council Meeting yesterday, in response to Council member Daniel Atonna, who bashed our storm restoration efforts during the July 4th storm. We are grateful for our dedicated members who worked countless hours to get the communities’ power on, even when the lights at our own homes are still out. We appreciate the gratitude from all the other Councilmembers who thanked us for our restoration efforts.
