This Caves and Karst Week, we're heading underground! Clarksville Cave is one of the best-known and well-loved wild caves in the Northeast. With nearly 4,800 feet of passages and three separate entrances, the popular horizontal cave (meaning no ropes or rappelling required!) offers a unique experience for curious explorers of all levels.

: Franny Reese State Park
HIGHLAND, Ulster County —
Named in honor of Frances “Franny” Reese — a co-founder of Scenic Hudson and lifelong champion of the Hudson Valley — this bluff-top forest is a fitting tribute to her legacy. The trails within the park follow historic carriage roads past 19th-century ruins, leading to this breathtaking sight of the Mid-Hudson Bridge and Hudson River. Have you experienced this view?

: Old Mud Creek Farm (Columbia County) —
Happy ! Inspired by the theme, we’re taking a look at a farm that illustrates the power of healthy soil…

This 390-acre farm wasn't always the thriving, organic operation you’ll find today. For years, the land was used to test pesticides and herbicides, leaving the soil depleted. In 2015, Scenic Hudson and the Columbia Land Conservancy worked together to protect it for agricultural use — and farmers got to work.

Through careful crop rotation, soil analysis, and strategic h**p planting (a natural soil remediator that helps draw heavy metals from the ground), Old Mud Creek has become a model for regenerative agriculture and carbon farming. The farm is now home to Hudson H**p and Hudson Carbon.

🌱On a day dedicated to , it’s a good reminder that healthy soil needs tending!

Frequently mistaken for a beaver, never given its due: Meet the muskrat.
These fascinating little rodents are all over the Hudson Valley's ponds, marshes, and streams — and they're a lot more interesting than most people realize. Did you know they can stay underwater for up to 17 minutes? And that's just one of many surprises.

Scenic Hudson's News + Valley Views:

05/27/2026

Hot tick summer has arrived in the Hudson Valley.

It's one of the best times of year to be outside — unfortunately, the ticks think so too. Before you head out, a few things worth knowing:

🌿 Stay on trails — ticks hang out in tall grasses, you don't have to.
🔍 Do a full body check when you get home, and again before bed — ankles, behind the knees, waistbands, armpits, neck, scalp. Ticks love a cozy crevice.
🚿 Shower within two hours — your best chance to catch ticks before they settle in.
🧒🐾 Check everyone you came with — kids, partners, pups. The pups especially.

If you do find a tick — pause. Remove it early and carefully: fine-tipped tweezers, steady upward pressure, no yanking. Save the tick and call your doctor if anything feels off.

Now. Tuck in those socks and get out there.
What are your tick-check habits? Share them in the comments below!

: Lake Walton Preserve
EAST FISHKILL, Dutchess County —
Most people zoom by this spot along the Dutchess Rail Trail without realizing what's just beyond the tree line! In May 2019, Scenic Hudson helped acquire and transfer these 200+ acres to Dutchess County, protecting a spring-fed 44-acre lake, wetlands, forest, and rich wildlife habitat. The preserve borders the Rail Trail for 1.5 miles — making it a perfect addition to any ride this .

It is a great month to get out on two wheels! 🚲
Both + , May feels like the perfect time to pedal together. We loved joining the community for rides through Poughkeepsie and Kingston — covering a combined 10+ miles of fresh air, good company, and Hudson Valley scenery. Cycling is good for the body and the mind. And the great news? You can hop on a bike beyond the month of May.
