Highland Falls Preserve, in Orange County, opened to visitors earlier this month. : Titusville Farm (Dutchess County)
This , we're highlighting a farm that shares its harvest with the community. Titusville Farm donates produce to the Pershing farm stand, helping bring fresh, local food to neighbors in the City of Poughkeepsie.

Established in 1788 as Cornell Farm, Titusville uses practices that build healthy soil to grow certified organic vegetables, fruit, flowers, and heirloom c***r apples. They also keep flocks of pasture-raised hens for eggs.

Stop by their farm stand on Titusville Road in Poughkeepsie, Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., for produce, eggs, and more. You can also find them at farmers' markets in Cold Spring, Beacon, Pelham, Irvington, and Hastings.

This , we're turning our eyes to a forest fungus that looks like it belongs on a coral reef. 🍄

Crested coral fungus (𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴) sends up clusters of pale branches, much like sea coral.

Look for it on the forest floor beneath conifers and hardwoods from late summer into fall, growing alone or in groups. Below ground, it partners with tree roots, trading nutrients with the forest around it. Be on the lookout for one during your next walk in the woods!

As one resident put it: “We’re a river town without access to the river.”. . .until NOW!
On October 3, we celebrated the opening of *Highland Falls Preserve* — the village’s first public riverfront park. Just a 10-minute walk from downtown, the new preserve spans 32 acres and features a scenic, one-mile loop trail.
Many thanks to the volunteers, including cadets from the neighboring U.S. Military Academy at West Point and local scouts, who pitched in nearly 500 hours to get the preserve ready for the public, moving more than 19,000 pounds of stone to build 26 steps up to a picnic area. https://www.scenichudson.org/news/highland-falls-preserve-opens-in-orange-county/
Conserved with Scenic Hudson in 2020, the preserve came to life through years of collaboration with the Village of Highland Falls , the village’s Trail Committee, dedicated volunteers, and grant support from the Hudson River Valley Greenway.

Thacher State Park, Voorheesvile (Albany County)
Mohawk people journeying between today’s Schoharie and Hudson River valleys met a steep obstacle when they encountered what’s now known as the Helderberg escarpment. To scale the limestone cliff, travelers leaned a tree against the rock face and trimmed its branches into rungs. : Croton Point Park
CROTON-ON-HUDSON, Westchester County –
Near the river's edge, oyster shells blanket the ground, with the oldest layers dating back 7,000 years or more. Known as a shell midden, the mound on this peninsula, built from the remains of countless meals, is considered by archaeologists to be the largest on the North Atlantic coast.

It points to a long presence of Indigenous peoples, like the Kitchawank, members of the Wappinger Confederacy. Walk the shoreline, soak in the views of Haverstraw Bay, and discover more about this point's story: https://parks.westchestercountyny.gov/croton-point-park

Happy birthday to Eleanor Roosevelt, born on this day in 1884! Renowned for her work in human rights, she was equally passionate about the environment. Much of that connection to the land took root here in the Hudson Valley, at Val-Kill, her home in Hyde Park.

: Migliorelli Farm (Dutchess County)
The roots of this family-run farm trace back to 1933! Starting in the Bronx, the family moved upstate to Red Hook in the early 1970s. Current owner Ken Migliorelli has spent 50 years farming, so we don’t begrudge him for prepping for semi-retirement…

Migliorelli still plans to work the land in Rhinebeck and Mount Tremper, but the family’s Red Hook Orchard is up for sale. His love of farming has kept him going all these years — and he hopes to find someone to take over the orchard with that same passion.

The good news? Thanks to a conservation easement the family secured with Scenic Hudson, the land’s future as farmland remains secure, regardless of who occupies it next. You can still pick up Migliorelli-grown produce at one of their THREE farm stand locations (Mount Tremper, Red Hook, and Rhinebeck) or at several weekly markets. https://www.migliorelli.com/
