In today's Trips Around Schuylkill, we look back on one of the most diabolical crimes during the Prohibition Era in Schuylkill County. In a bold attempt to “burn alive” Reverend Patrick J. Fleming, Mahanoy Plane’s Irish priest, owners of the Tilly Billy Hotel, a prostitution house, poured gallons of gasoline onto his rectory during the early morning hours of June 15, 1926, and ignited it, turning the rectory into a massive inferno.

June of 2026 marks the notorious 100th anniversary of the fire bombing of the Holy Rosary rectory and veteran fire fighters and co-authors, Michael Glore and Michael Kitsock, a native of Mahanoy Plane, investigate this event from both the fire-fighting and the criminal in our upcoming June 18 presentation. https://www.schuylkillhistory.org/events/5k4qw64ypl50qmxe7cgih4ex2cr4yg

Today’s Trips Around Schuylkill features the Jordon Brothers, a Frackville-based band that became one of the most popular musical acts in Pennsylvania and the surrounding region.

The brothers got their start in Schuylkill County before appearing on Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour and touring with Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars. Back home, they became a fixture at venues such as Willow Lake in Schuylkill Haven, where generations of local fans packed the dance floor.

Do you remember seeing them perform?

With the New York Knicks back in the NBA Finals, today's Trips Around Schuylkill shares a connection you may not know about. 🏀

With the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, here's a Schuylkill County connection.

Pottsville native John J. Bergen served as Chairman of Madison Square Garden Corporation from 1958 to 1962. Since Madison Square Garden owned the Knicks, Bergen was one of the top executives overseeing the franchise during that time.

Before his career in New York, Bergen lived with his family at 300 S. Centre Street in Pottsville, where his father, Thomas, worked as a furniture dealer.

Which team will you be rooting for in the finals?

Join SCHS as historian Amanda Owen shares the story of the Justice Bell, a one-ton bronze bell cast in 1915 to support the women's suffrage movement. Modeled after Philadelphia's Liberty Bell, the Justice Bell was taken on a statewide tour across Pennsylvania, stopping in towns large and small to rally support for women's voting rights.

In a powerful symbol of the movement, the bell's clapper was chained and silenced until women won the vote. When Pennsylvania ratified the 19th Amendment in 1920, the clapper was finally released and the bell rang out in celebration 48 times, once for every state in the Nation at that time.

Learn how this remarkable artifact became a symbol of the suffrage movement and why its story still resonates more than a century later. Join us this Thursday, 6/4 at 6:30 for a presentation by the Justice Bell Foundation. This program is sponsored by Explore Schuylkill.

On Memorial Day we honor and remember those who have died in service to our country.

In today’s Trips Around Schuylkill we take a look back to Pottsville in 1986, when Vietnam War veterans participated in a parade to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. This wall is a half-size replica of the Memorial Wall in D.C. that still tours around the country forty years later. It will be in Bloomsburg June 5-7at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds.
