Trash pickup changes clarification

**Updated June 30 to include new graphic clarifying the container policy**

*Continue using black and/or blue cans.
*Bulk pick-ups can be scheduled online or via phone.
*Enforcement of trash policies will be issued by city staff, not PPD.
*A grace period will be in effect for 90 days and notices will be issued before fines during this period.
*We recognize there has been confusion in messaging and timing and we are working hard to better communicate information as this change rolls out. Have a question or need help? Email me: [email protected]

Starting July 1, schedule a bulk trash pick-up at least 24 hours in advance.

Why this change?
• Improves route efficiency and service reliability
• Reduces truck mileage and wear-and-tear, helping control long-term costs
• Creates a consistent citywide system to help curb illegal dumping
• Supports safer, more predictable operations for collection crews

Schedule a pickup and review all trash guidelines here: portsmouthva.gov/bulk-pick-up

Remember, all trash and recycling goes into one can, black or blue (or both, if needed.) Recycling gets sorted at our facility to avoid the landfill. ♻️
