📣Are you a vendor market or event manager?

Im designing Community Market Operation Systems and Audits starting within the Hampton Roads area. I’m interviewing market and event operators about vendor retention and sustainability challenges.

Here’s what I have thus far.

Community market systems design involves structuring the entire network of actors, rules, and supporting functions—such as infrastructure, finance, and information—to create sustainable local exchanges. It aims for inclusivity and resilience by strengthening connections between producers and consumers, rather than just delivering aid. Effective design utilizes a "five Rs" framework (Resources, Roles, Relationships, Rules, and Results) to ensure local, economic benefits. [1, 2, 3]

Key components and principles for designing community market systems include:

• Inclusive Systems Approach: Focusing on making markets work for marginalized groups by increasing their access to resources, skills, and financial services.
• Systemic Change: Moving beyond short-term interventions to create lasting change, such as facilitating new business partnerships or improving local regulations.
• Five Rs Framework:

• Resources: Identifying input, finance, and infrastructure.
• Roles: Defining actors (producers, traders, consumers, policymakers).
• Relationships: Fostering collaboration among actors.
• Rules: Aligning formal and informal norms/policies.
• Results: Aiming for competitiveness and resilience.

• Market Assessment: Analyzing local economic power, population density, and existing infrastructure to determine whether to apply a "light touch" or direct intervention.
• Local Value Chain Strengthening: Supporting small-scale producers through relevant technology (e.g., small tools vs. large machinery) and improved market linkages.
• Public Market Success Factors: Ensuring consistent, high-quality, and, localized, products that connect community members. [2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10]

Common tools include building "results chains" to visualize how interventions will lead to specific, sustainable, economic, impacts. [7]
