Hundreds of Portsmouth families got free back-to-school supplies, haircuts, food and more Saturday at the 6th annual Ballin' on the River event at Festival Park.

Big H.O.M.I.E.S. and Portsmouth Parks and Recreation partnered with dozens of local organizations across the Hampton Roads region to create a one-stop shop for back-to-school needs. Families received free backpacks, school supplies, hygiene products and food. Kids also received free haircuts and braiding services, provided by the Family First Finney Foundation, to help them feel confident heading into the new school year.

Retired barber Tenico Jones traveled from her home in Florida to Portsmouth to give kids free haircuts at the event, something she does every year. "And if you look good, you feel good. Your attitude is unstoppable," Jones said.

A big thank you to Sunshine Swinson owner of Just Brunch Restaurant , and a special thank you to Crystal , for investing in the youth of the Big H.O.M.I.E.S. Summer Job Program.

Our youth gained hands-on experience on what it takes to operate a successful restaurant business. It was especially rewarding for a few of them who have aspirations of owning their own restaurant one day.

They’re building confidence, developing lifelong skills, and discovering that hard work can open doors to a bright future.
We’re excited to see what the future holds for them. Just know Big Homies will be right there to help and guide them.

Our youth are gaining hands-on experience by cooking, cleaning, sorting and packaging food, and serving meals to members of our community. For many, this is more than a summer job—it’s an opportunity to explore their dream of becoming a chef while learning teamwork, responsibility, food safety, and the joy of serving others.

They’re building confidence, developing lifelong skills, and discovering that hard work and service can open doors to a bright future. We’re so proud of them!
