We organize free events that bring volunteers who like to fix things together with people who have broken items that need fixing. What Are Repair Cafes?

They are festive events where volunteers are on hand to fix items as well as teach participants how to fix their own items in various locations around the Portland metro area. How Our Repair Cafes Work

1) We are invited to host a repair event at a venue.
2) Notice is sent out to the volunteer pool to see who is interested and/or available to repair items on that day.
3) Information about who is p

articipating, time, location, and what kinds of items to bring is sent out to our email list, posted to our website, and other available channels and networks. Note: Depending on the event, the types of repairs will vary. Most cafes will have people who can fix garments and small appliances. Typical repairs will include:

small appliances
electronics
toys
jewelry
garments
bicycles

Each Repair Cafe event is unique based on the venue and the volunteers present. The types of repairs available are subject to change as well. Information on each cafe is updated regularly on this site. What to bring? Broken items and any replacement parts you think you might need. Curiosity, patience and a DIY attitude. Of course, there is no guarantee you’ll walk out with a workable item. We may not be staffed with the right skills; it may take some time to research and/or find repair parts, or it may just not be feasible to repair your item. But we’ll give it our best shot!

Get your items fixed for free tomorrow at our Repair Cafe! 12-3pm at Leaven Community Center, 5431 NE 20th, Portland, 97211

We will have volunteers repairing the following:
• Outdoor gear
• Jewelry
• Small appliances
• Garments and textiles
• Bikes
• Tool/knife sharpening (two items at a time)
• Broken ceramics with Kintsugi techniques*

This is our last Repair Cafe before our summer break; we are excited to see you there!

*Note:
If you are bringing an item for Kintsugi, please remember:
• Bring a box/container to take your item away, as it will need a day to cure.
• This is not a workshop, so please just bring items that you would like volunteers to fix.
• The repair materials are not food safe, so please do not bring any items that are used for food.

Give your garments a new life by learning to darn! In this hands-on class, instructor Sivia will teach several darning methods to repair holes and reinforce weakened material in socks, sweaters, and other knitwear. These methods are also usable for other fabric repair but we will demonstrate and work on knitted fabric in class.

Learn to mend your clothing using the traditional Japanese visible mending art of sashiko embroidery! Sashiko is an embroidery technique that stabilizes and reinforces mends in fabric while adding beautiful embellishment. No embroidery experience required!

In this small hands-on workshop, our lovely instructor Angela will walk you through creating and adding a sashiko patch to an item of clothing or fabric with a tear or hole. She will talk about the history of Sashiko, what ways it is used today, and which mending situations are most suited to sashiko use. You will choose the sashiko pattern stencil you wish to trace and will go home with thread and a needle (and fabric if desired) to finish your project with and/or start others at home!

This workshop will cover an overview of cell phone repair, including theory, identification, repair approaches (battery, screen, and other components) and general troubleshooting. The class includes a hands-on lesson disassembling a provided utility model iPhone SE 2020, front to back!

This workshop will cover an overview of cell phone repair, including theory, identification, repair approaches (battery, screen, and other components) and general troubleshooting. The class includes a hands on lesson disassembling a provided utility model iPhone SE 2020, front to back!

This workshop is structured through presentation and demonstration rather than actively repairing our personal phones during the workshop. We will not be covering software-related issues (such as lack of storage), but rather physical issues including such as battery, screen, and camera replacement. Additionally, Karlen will happily give overviews to any device that a model number can be provided for and explain how to do a variety of repairs.

Join us for a darn good time learning how to darn your clothes on Mar 28th from 10am-12:30pm at Leaven Community Center!

Darning is a kind of mending used for knitwear primarily. Mending is something we can all do, saving clothes from the landfill and healing our hearts in the process. Mending is a meditative, slow process that improves with practice.

Sivia will teach several methods during this workshop that you can use right away to start darning your socks, sweaters, and other knitwear. These darning techniques can also be used for mending other garments.

All skill levels are welcome, and we encourage you to bring your own items to work on, though we also provide practice items. All materials provided & you will go home with a little mending kit!
