🌍 A Journey of Gratitude: Some leaders teach children to fit the mold. Others build a world where the mold bends to fit every child.

Meet Susan Osterhoff, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Project Commotion and a 2020 Gratitude Network Fellow. ✨

Susan and a friend saw a truth too many children who learn differently were up against: a world of inequitable access, built without them in mind. Instead of accepting that reality, they chose to build something new.

Project Commotion was born from a powerful belief—that purposeful play, movement, and community relationships unlock development in every child, no matter how they learn. Through hands-on programming and genuine partnership with families and educators, Project Commotion strengthens connections that last.

Today, Susan leads an organization reaching twice as many children, teachers, and parents as it did in 2020—with staff capacity doubled and budget more than doubled. Her work reminds us that inclusion isn’t a one-time fix. It’s a daily commitment to ensuring every child gets to move, play, and belong.

🌍 A Journey of Gratitude: Africa’s youth are often celebrated as a statistic. Some leaders choose to prepare them to lead.

Meet Esther Mwaniki, Founder and Executive Director of Lapid Leaders Africa and a 2024 Gratitude Network Fellow. ✨

Growing up on the outskirts of Nairobi, Esther watched her mother, a teacher at heart, serve the community. Seeing that example, along with a childhood commitment to being a voice for others, shaped her path. Today, Lapid Leaders Africa activates purpose-driven leadership through a three-part journey: lead self, lead marketplace, lead Africa.

In ten years, Lapid has reached about 1,800 leaders, most of them young people, with a goal of reaching 100,000 across the continent. Esther reminds us that success matters most when it makes something possible for society.

🌍 A Journey of Gratitude: Some people choose between the discipline of the mind and the freedom of the body. Rebecca Davis built a way to need both.💃

Meet Rebecca Davis, Executive Director of MindLeaps and a 2018 Gratitude Network Fellow. ✨

Rebecca grew up loving two different worlds—the sharpness of a good challenge in the classroom, and the creativity and expression that dance unlocked in her body. Rather than choosing one, she found a way to bring them together for the children who needed it most.

MindLeaps was founded in 2014 on a striking idea: that dance and data could open lifelong pathways for underserved youth. Through a curriculum that uses movement to build seven core social-emotional and cognitive skills, MindLeaps meets children where they are—and helps them go further than they imagined.

Today, MindLeaps reaches 3,400 children and families every year across five countries, spanning four nations in Africa and reaching all the way to New York City. Rebecca’s work is a reminder that growth doesn’t have to follow just one rhythm—sometimes the body leads where the mind hasn’t gone yet. 🪇

Last week, Gratitude Network brought together over 40 social-impact leaders from across East Africa for our first-ever regional summit in Nairobi. Fellows connected in person, swapped hard-won lessons, and dug into a question every one of them is wrestling with: how do we collaborate to optimize support and resources so our organizations can grow — and reach more of the communities who need us?
