Our content is the life work by David Eckman, Ph.D. who has spent over 40 years in Biblical research. He is an instructor in the disciplines of spiritual life formation, and he has spent countless hours counseling and discipling individuals. The result is a uniquely gifted individual who effectively communicates God’s truths to a hurting world. David grew up in a dysfunctional family. He found emotional freedom when he finally experienced how God truly loved him. At Western Seminary, he has been involved in extensive teaching, discipling, and counseling for over 40 years. On October 15, 1997, he founded BWGI Ministries, which fosters spiritual transformation through helping people understand who they are in Christ. Dr. David Eckman has been a pastor for 16 years followed by 7 years as a Dean and Executive Vice President for Western Seminary in San Jose and Portland. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Master of Theology, Master of Divinity, Doctor of Philosophy in Hebrew Studies and the Old Testament. He studied at Oxford University in England from 1982 to 1986 to work on his doctorate, and received his Ph.D. in Old Testament and Hebrew from Golden Gate Seminary. Dr. Eckman is a member of the National Association of Hebrew Professors and was supervised by Professor James Barr at Oxford University. James Barr is widely acknowledged as the leading Hebrew scholar of the English-speaking world.

Another example of the elevated status of women in the Old Testament is the story of Huldah the prophetess in 2 Kings 22. Under King Josiah, the Temple, which had been partially destroyed, was repaired. In the process, the Book of the Law, most likely Deuteronomy, was discovered. The men who discovered the Law, took it to King Josiah who realized that it had been ignored for generations. In order to confirm the validity of the predictions made in the Biblical text, leaders were sent to the prophetess Huldah. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗼𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

Huldah not only confirmed the Old Testament predictions concerning Judah, but she confirmed the message of the great prophet Jeremiah, who was also in Jerusalem at the same time. It is striking that Hilkiah and his associates went to the woman prophetess and not to the male prophets Jeremiah or Zephaniah who were also prophets in Judah during this time period. 𝗛𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗮𝗵'𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀 𝗝𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗮𝗵'𝘀.

𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗛𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗮𝗵, 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗲𝘁.

They had a double duty: one was to be properly discipled, and the other was to keep these men going.

𝗬𝗲𝘀, 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀. In fact, these disciples traveled with him along with the men. This is clearly stated in Luke 8:1-3.

As Christ is preaching and proclaiming the Kingdom of heaven and at the same time, he is taking his 12 disciples with him along with three women who are specifically mentioned, Mary, Joanna, and Suzanne. Then in verse 3 it is also mentioned that many women were accompanying this group. Fascinatingly, these women were not only part of the discipleship band, but they also had another duty that the men did not have. And that is they were serving them, and Luke used the New Testament term "to deacon." They were serving these men and supplying what these men needed from their own resources.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗼𝘂𝘀. 𝗡𝗼 𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗯𝗶 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.

The implication is that traveling with Jesus was open to women who felt they must dedicate themselves to being discipled, and also to serve the men who followed Jesus.

The writer of Proverbs unabashedly connects the feminine figure of Wisdom to the very work of God. One might say this depiction of Wisdom is merely a figure of speech, but it is obvious that the author of Proverbs holds a high enough view of women to connect Wisdom with Yahweh and his creative activity. If women were polluted, lowly figures in early Israelite culture, the author would not have linked them to the divine.

𝗜𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗶𝘀𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿?

As Proverbs 31 comes to an end, we are told that the woman's children and husband rise up and bless her. Her husband says, ". . . many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all." The punchline of the entire poem is at the end, where it says, "Give her the fruit of her hands and let her works praise her in the gates," (Prov. 31:31). This verse is crucially important because the men are directed to praise and appreciate the woman in the gates (a public place) and to allow her to partake in what she produced.

This advice is not just an ancient piece of wisdom but is also an excellent example for men and leaders of the church to follow today.

Theology of Image and Likeness

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆.

In Genesis 1, God the Father and the Son were talking together about the creation of humanity. The one speaking said we need to make humanity in the image and likeness of ourselves. Typically, the word "image" refers to the appearance of something or someone and the word "likeness" refers to inherent qualities.

When we look at Genesis 2 and 3, we see that Adam was given the responsibility of making sure that he did not eat the fruit. He was given the responsibility of headship. The woman was given the responsibility of being a helper to the head. 𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗻: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗲𝗿.

In Genesis, we are told that Eve, which is the Latin form of the name Ghayah, Hebrew for life, was going to be the mother or generator of all of life. 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗻, 𝗘𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆. In that sense, Eve reflects God the Father's relationship to the Son.

Two roles were given to Eve: the first is the Divine Helper. Eve would be the Divine Helper to the man. Her wisdom and her abilities would be needed. Genesis 2 emphasizes her role as the Divine Helper, but it is in Genesis 3 when Adam gives her the name Eve (life) that her second role, the generator of life, is introduced. Eve and every woman who gives birth is an imitation of God the Father in that they are capable of generating life. Adam was given one primary role: Headship. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲.

It is one thing to say that the couple is made in the image and likeness of God. It is far more significant to say that because we are made in the image and likeness of God we practice roles that are essential to the Trinity itself. 𝗚𝗼𝗱'𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗿𝘆, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻.

Here’s an excerpt from Chapter 6, pp. 99-100 from Dr. Eckman’s new book:

It is interesting to note that when Jesus interacted with the woman and the young girl, he used terms of affection. No such language is used with the men who are healed.

With these two interactions, Jesus boldly negated the purity laws, but also treated the two women with tenderness and affection. The purity laws were not designed to reveal women's inferiority or shame, but to allow proper access to a holy God. The women left behind the world of pollution and uncleanness and Christ ushered them into the brightness of the Kingdom of God. In the next chapters we will see how Paul, as directed by Christ, profoundly changed the status of women.
