Good Friday is a horrible Friday for the Son of God. Psalm 22, the Psalm that spells out what happened to Christ on the Cross, and described what He felt as he hung there. He described those about the Cross as being like animals, evil dogs, bulls, and ripping at Him like a lion. No humanity was shown to Him. He who embraced sinful humanity experienced humanity at its worse. The scribes, the high priests, and the Pharisees mocked him. That is like the American Supreme Court showing up at the ex*****on of a criminal and mocking the man as he was being executed.
Our sins are real and sometimes brutal. He became our sins for us, so that we might have the righteousness of God the Father in Him. And all humanity could do was make His suffering worse. As he looked out at the scene around him what affected Him the most was, “My God, MY God, to what purpose have you abandoned me?” Like a child abandoned, (He knows exactly why He has been abandoned), His heart screams out in agony at the experience, “Why?”
The why is for us.
