In Bangladesh, food inflation and rising commodity costs mean a widowed mother earning informal daily wages, often less than $2 a day, spends up to 70% of her earnings just on basic rice and oil.

When a sudden flood, illness, or emergency hits, families are forced into high-interest informal debt cycles or forced to pull children out of school to work daily wage labor.

Meet 19-year-old Islam from Gaza.

When Islam was only 13, her world was turned upside down. Losing her father left her family in deep financial hardship, and traditional schooling became an uphill battle. Facing learning difficulties and the weight of grief, Islam eventually had to leave school for a year.

But Islam is resilient. She knew she had a talent that books couldn't capture: the art of handcraft.

With the support of her Orphans in Need sponsor, Islam didn't just survive, she pivoted. Sponsorship gave her the support she needed, covering the costs of her vocational training and the essential materials, needles, fabric, and thread, to master sewing and embroidery.

Today, Islam is building a future where she is the breadwinner. She dreams of opening her own tailor shop to provide beautiful clothing for the women of Gaza and to mentor other girls who, like her, just need a chance to shine.
