This week, APN welcomed two mama cats and their babies into our care. These two mama kitties and their babies come from a colony in Chillicothe, Ohio.
Both of these sweet girls have spent years surviving outside the best they could. While there were a few kind-hearted people who did their best to look after them, there were also some very unkind people who made their existence even harder. We are incredibly grateful we were able to step in and finally bring them to safety.
The gray mama, estimated to be around 5–6 years old based on how long she has been around the apartment complex, has sadly spent years having litter after litter. Our hearts absolutely break for her. The toll that life outside has taken on her tiny body is impossible to ignore. She is underweight, appears to be blind or partially blind in one eye and seems to have something going on with her nose that will require veterinary care as soon as possible.
But for the first time in a very long time, she is safe.
And we are so thankful to say this will be her last litter of babies.
Right now, our priority is getting this mama the care she has so desperately needed and gone without her entire life. Her babies are safe and warm with her and she no longer has to fight to survive on her own.
Her kittens are estimated to be around 5 weeks old. They are sweet, playful and overall appear healthy. Despite everything, mama has taken wonderful care of them.
While we are heartbroken for the litters before them that we could not save and the suffering they may have endured, we are grateful the cycle stops here.
The second mama, a beautiful Siamese girl, is incredibly sweet. She was rescued alongside her two tiny 3-day-old babies. They, too, have endured the same harsh life outdoors, but they are now safe, warm and being cared for. Mama already seems so grateful to finally be somewhere she can rest and feel secure. This little family is currently with a temporary foster while we actively search for a longer-term foster placement for mama and her babies.
This colony still needs so much help.
Resources are limited and TNVR appointments have been incredibly difficult to secure, but we remain committed to helping stabilize this colony through TNVR while also working to get the friendly cats and kittens safely into foster homes.
We truly cannot do this without the support of our amazing community.
If you are able to open your home to foster, please reach out to us. APN provides food, litter and veterinary care — all we need is a safe place for them to land.
We could also really use help through monetary donations. Right now, our top priority is getting these mamas and babies the medical care they need while continuing TNVR efforts for the remaining cats in the colony.
In addition to this colony, we are actively helping several other colonies and are in ongoing need of foster homes for cats and kittens who are waiting for a safe place to go.
If you are able to donate toward their care today, please know your support will make a meaningful difference for these two little families and the many cats still waiting for help.
