The Plain City Historical Society Founded in 1982 to preserve historical memorabilia. Regular meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 111 W. Main St. 7:00PM Sharp. It was done in 1872.

Isaac Bigelow was born in New York August 25, 1797. He was the son of Dr. Israel Bigelow. He came to Darby Township in Madison County where he had purchased a tract of land with the intention of establishing a stock farm. Instead he founded the Village of Plain City. As the tide of immigration seemed to be in the direction of central Ohio, Isaac Bigelow decided to lay out a town to meet the wants of the people. Accordingly, on July 8, 1818 the plan of Westminster was laid out. The name "Westminster" was later changed to "Pleasant Valley", and 15 years after Isaac's death the citizens petitioned their representative in the legislature for an act to change the name to Plain City. The Plain City Historical Society was founded in 1982. The Society acquired a storefront at 111 West Main Street in the center of downtown and now operate a Museum and Historical Library where artifacts can be displayed and the history of the area can be preserved. The Historical Society is currently open on:

•Tuesdays - 10:00 am - Noon
•Thursdays - Noon - 3:00 pm
•Saturdays - 10:00 am - Noon

Everyone mark your calendars to attend the Plain City Historical Society Meeting next Tuesday, October 27th. There will be a wonderful presentation on "What if the Battle of Gettysburg happened in Plain City"? Plain City will be mapped to show where the different battles would have been fought in the area!! This is really going to be interesting. We hope you will join us. Everyone welcome. Bring a guest. Doors open at 6:30 and the meeting will start at 7:00. The gift shop will be open!!! Get some early Christmas gifts.

Hello to the Historical Society Members

Our next meeting will be the is Tuesday, September 22 at 7:00. We will discuss changing the constitution of our organization from 11 meetings a year to 4 meetings a year. Our program will be for you to "Bring an Article from your High School Years". There can be a story behind your article or it can be something you hold dear. You can bring your high school year book if you wish.

October 27th meeting will be a presentation by Mark Thompson and Will Hoffine. They have been working together on figuring out when and where battles of Gettysburg would have taken place had they been in our area. Looks like an interesting evening putting forces at the places we recognize to gain perspective on the battles themselves. Bring a history buff friend.

ATTN: Crafter Friends!! The Plain City Historical Society is getting ready to open their Gift Store!!! As a crafter I know you have a couple of things that you made just sitting around. Well, why don't you donate them to the Historical Society for their store? We'll give you a donation receipt for your taxes and our gift shop gets a great home made item for the store that raises money to keep our Society open!!!! You can drop off at the Historical Society during our open hours of Tuesdays 11-1, Thursdays 4:30 to 6:30 and Saturdays 11-1. Our store grand opening will be this coming Saturday for the Corn Carnival. We'll open at 10:00 AM Thank you and we appreciate any quality items we can receive.
