Congratulations to Lexi Belculfine, MBA, newly named Managing Director and Assistant Vice President of the Center for Media Innovation at Point Park University.

Lexi brings deep roots in journalism to the role, with experience at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, The Incline, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the University of Pittsburgh.

There’s also a special connection here: Lexi got an early look at philanthropy as a Heinz Endowments intern. It’s exciting to see her lead such an important hub for the local news and information ecosystem.

Endowments Director of Veterans and Workforce Megan Andros recently delivered the welcome remarks at the Bridges to Resolution Summit, a convening hosted by the Network for Nonprofit and Social Impact, led by Michelle Shumate, marking the release of two new reports on how to design human service referral networks so people actually receive the support they need.

The Endowments helped fund this research, alongside the Institute for Veterans and Military Families - IVMF. The bottom line: to know whether a network is working, measure whether people actually received help, not just whether a referral was made.

As Megan shared during her remarks: "The central metric in these reports is the service receipt rate... Not the referral. Not the handoff."

"An intervention becomes what its funder measures."

Grateful to be part of building the evidence behind this life-changing work.

Pennsylvania has critical workforce needs, and veterans have valuable skills and experience to help meet them. Yet too often, civilian career pathways do not fully recognize military training and expertise.

At a recent State Capitol discussion, lawmakers, state agencies and veterans' organizations explored ways to ease the transition from military service to civilian employment through licensing reforms, apprenticeships and other workforce supports. Research from the Clearinghouse for Military Family Readiness, supported by the Endowments, is helping build the evidence for faster, smarter pathways from service to civilian careers. Strengthening those connections can help veterans build stability sooner while helping communities fill essential roles across the Commonwealth.

Kudos to Carmen Anderson, Vice President of Equity and Community Partnership at the Endowments, on being honored at the 2026 Amachi Hachi Pachi!

In her remarks, Carmen spoke about how a mentor's steady presence can change what a child believes is possible, and highlighted Amachi Pittsburgh's work mentoring young people, supporting caregivers, and championing policies that keep families connected. As Carmen put it, these children "are not risks to be managed. They are promises to be honored."

Thank you, Amachi, for the special recognition and for showing up for children and families every day.

Pittsburgh's Hazelwood neighborhood offers hopeful lessons for communities working to welcome new investment without pushing out the people who call it home.

In a new piece for The Conversation US, Ira Goldstein of Reinvestment Fund looks at what happened in the Hazelwood community as Hazelwood Green came into being. Residents largely stayed in their homes, the neighborhood grew more diverse and home prices stayed within reach of working families.

The research also listens to the concerns residents and community leaders share: rising housing costs, deepening poverty and blighted properties that make it hard for families to stay. Those concerns are real, and they're why the work of Hazelwood Initiative, Inc., its neighborhood partners and residents matter so much.

The work continues, and Hazelwood's lessons can help other communities.

A new Pittsburgh Magazine feature looks at how that vision continues to shape the city today, from packed performance venues to vibrant public spaces like Arts Landing. The story includes perspectives from Endowments Arts & Culture Managing Director Jasmin DeForrest and others helping chart the district’s future.

As Jasmin notes, understanding changing audiences will help ensure the Cultural District continues to thrive for the long term.
